Seems ridiculous. Div 1 teams ( similar for 1a) have 7 senior league games, then 3 either top or bottom 4. Now it's 3 in the championship and say 1 in the QF. So that's 14 competitive games in total. But for teams with a few county reps, it's straight in to the 3 game round robin in the championship with their full complement of players. So, our county champions will only have 6 competitive games as a unit ?? (unless it is Rathnew). Would this be in line with other counties ?

Alright, folks, big things stirring down in the Garden County - Wicklow GAA's Club Championship is just about to kick off, and as always, the stakes couldn't be higher. Pride, passion, and parish - it's that time of year again where every club from Arklow to Aughrim believes this could be their year.

But this season, there's more than silverware on the line. There's a growing focus on development - on the grassroots feeding into the county setup. Because let's be honest: Wicklow's path to consistent intercounty success isn't going to be paved with imports or shortcuts. It's built at the club level, pitch by pitch, match by match, where young players cut their teeth and learn what it really means to wear that jersey.

And speaking of development - one name on every Wicklow supporter's lips right now is Matthew Ging. If you haven't heard of him yet, you will. Ging has been turning heads with his performances, and his trajectory looks like it's headed straight to the county panel in 2025.

This guy isn't just a talent - he's a symbol of what the club system can produce when it's working right. Strong, composed, and with an eye for goal that'd make any manager smile, Matthew Ging is proof that the next generation is ready to step up. Wicklow need leaders, and Ging looks like one of them.

You see, for too long Wicklow have been stuck in that frustrating limbo - flashes of potential but lacking the depth to really push on in Leinster. That changes when the clubs become talent factories. When Rathnew, Baltinglass, Blessington, and the rest aren't just competing for titles - they're producing county-standard players year in, year out.

So as the Club Championship gets underway - keep an eye out. You're not just watching battles for bragging rights - you're watching the seeds of Wicklow's future being sown.

And remember this: The rise of a county begins in the mud, under the lights on a Thursday night training session, in the roar of a junior B sideline, and in the moment a player like Matthew Ging decides he's ready to lead.

Here's to a cracking championship - and to Wicklow's future. Up the clubs, up the county! when the club is over pick the

I'm presuming you mean 2026 for young Ging heading to the county panel ?? Personally, I'm surprised he wasn't there this year.

Good luck with that, and I say that genuinely. . Wicklow forum members in general, seem very reticent in offering their opinions for discussion. Must be one of the most under subscribed forums on the Hogan Stand. Hopefully with the championships about to kick off and the possibility of a new manager for the county football team, interest might pick up.

Matthew Ging was part of the Wicklow football panel at the start of the league. Based upon his performances in last year's club championship, I think he is one of the top six forwards in the county especially considering rule change and the introduction of two-pointers to the scoring scheme. However, he disappeared and to the best of my knowledge only made one substitute appearance early in the league. I don't know if this is due to his own withdrawal through injury or he felt he should a starter or another reason. I can't imagine Oisin wouldn't want a calibre player like Ging involved. The senior club championship is very competitive and games are a decent standard but our clubs are not progressing as before in the Leinster club championship. Tinahely beat Portalington last year before losing out to Tullamore. I'd love to see Wicklow champions competing at semi-final/final end of the Leinster club championship as I think this would help players compete at intercounty level particular at the higher calibre counties. I'd worry how weak our intermediate and junior club champions are in the province. Both these champions lose in the early rounds of these two competitions which is a concern.

What a cracking football game. Fair play to Meath. And, I would recommend that Oisin, whether he goes or stays, his coaching team and the entire Wicklow panel watch this game over and over to see how this game should be played. To hell with this playing back and forth around the D which, in my opinion, is a throwback to that dreadful defensive football of the past number of years. Have the strength - and courage to go straight in. It brings results. Dean Healy would love to be on that Meath team.
