Is their relegation in the SHC? Bagenalstown lose by 35 points to MLR yesterday, this isn't doing anyone any good

No automatic relegation so Bagenalstown will be staying senior unless they want to go down but I can't see that. Reality is they're still way too strong for all teams in intermediate possible exception being Naomi Brid who are looking good to win intermediate and they'll hopefully go senior next year. We need 6 senior teams even though it is unbalanced with the big two way out in front. Bagenalstown showed against SM what they are capable of and did likewise in the semi final last year but as always with them there's no consistency at all. They were missing two strong county players in fairness who would have made a difference. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1621 - 03/08/2025 13:36:04 2629899 Link 0 |
Ballinkillen Ciarán definitely - he's going to play for the hurlers and manage the footballers !

Don't be saying it's a long drive … sure Joe is only going up there to try convince Keith Doyle to throw in his lot with Carlow next year and is telling him sure it's only a short spin.

Not so sure they'd be too strong for intermediate

Depends on intermediate winners. Bagenalstown need MLR to win it otherwise they'll Go down. Also, Myshall will be hoping MLR or Carlow Town win Junior to avoid relegation from intermediate. Carlowtothecore1 (Carlow) - Posts: 72 - 03/08/2025 21:06:42 2629956 Link 0 |
There's no automatic relegation in the hurling championships. The senior championship is supposed to be minimum of 6 teams so Bagenalstown definitely won't be going down, unless they themselves push the county board for regrading but that won't be happening and would only happen if they could show they were losing a load of players. Next years senior championship will be 6 teams unless MLR win the intermediate.

Poor fare at the weekend. Ballinkillen gave their all against rangers, the sending off didn't help but it didn't change the result, rangers very wasteful and didnt look sharp. St Mullins looked very good yesterday and will be hot favourites in the final but how bad are myshall? Very worrying for them, given a couple of there better players are older now also. Yeah it was very disappointing. Outside of the big two the quality just isn't there among the rest and there's no sign of the gap closing. Myshall just don't have near enough high quality players to trouble either the big two (when it matters) and not a lot coming either to replace the older lads. Whatever chance Ballinkillen had it was gone at ht with the red card. It was harsh enough especially when the player was targeted at ht and the MLR player who started it got off scot free. But that's what happens at the level and ultimately it was indiscipline on the BK player's part. For the final SM are definitely moving better and their forwards are lethal - an inter-county standard forward line. MLR too reliant on Chris and you can see he's getting frustrated that others can't match standards. Still, there is a chance SM could be beaten and they are capable of an odd off day as Bagenalstown showed. The intermediate and junior finals should be worth watching and I think the standards in both have definitely risen this year and that's probably all down to the controversial split season so for that reason it's doing hurling good but it is very frustrating that its now mid August and no serious football has been played all year. I don't know what the answer is tbh though. It's great to see the likes of Burren Rangers emerging and Naomh Brid and CTHC both resurgent, and K/C back hurling also - none of that would be possible if not for the split season - but football is definitely suffering. Other counties, bigger than us, wouldn't give a hoot and football would take priority but for the sake of our hurling tradition which is so strong down south especially, we can't and shouldn't do that. Maybe though we should switch it around every year so every second year football starts early summer and then hurling in autumn. I think that was the original plan but it changed and now it's hurling first all the time. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1621 - 11/08/2025 16:53:09 2631167 Link 0 |

Hurling panning out as expected, similar to the Messi and Ronaldo the two teams are just too good for everyone else, of course there are other factors at play but simply put Mullins and Rangers are too good. I do worry for the standard of hurling when Mullins drop off a bit which they will with generational talents not as up and coming. This will have a knock on effect to Rangers and others... really and truly the hurling is becoming a bit boring - could just be a straight final last few years and I expect for the next 2 or 3 at least. I would personally like to see the football played first for a bit of a shake up could also be a bit of a leveller for the hurling teams (more time to train, weather etc). Certainly though I have lost a bit of interest in the hurling and although we are in a golden era of talent and two powerhouse teams and the future may not be as bright as what we are experiencing currently its just a bit boring till the final but it simply is what it is. Is there many leavening the hurlers? Heard a few whispers about a few Ceatharlach7000 (Carlow) - Posts: 6 - 12/08/2025 11:46:13 2631363 Link 0 |
Poor hurlers. You'd better ask the baker. The butcher and candlestickmaker wouldn't have such skills.

What have the senior hurling attendances been loke this year, looks to have been poor up to now and even the semi finals the stand looked sparse, is that correct? more4me (Carlow) - Posts: 111 - 12/08/2025 19:54:04 2631515 Link 0 |
The SHC has panned.put as expected.given that both St Mullkns and Rangers have verybstrong panels. The intermediate is and has been interesting with some great games being played. Naomh Brid look to be the form team but Burrwn put it up to them fairly well in the semi while Rangers were roo good for Carlow Town. The standard at intermediate has definitely improved with teams being able to concentrate on hurling and teams took points off each other in the preliminary rounds. Carlow Tiwn early on had excellent results. The junior has proved to be a very competitive competition with again good standard of hurling. Some teams took big beatings but kept playing which is good to see. Overall- junior and intermediate have shown up very well. Big increase in standard to other years and games and competitions were run off very well played on time and we have the finals to now look forward to. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1883 - 13/08/2025 15:00:23 2631685 Link 0 |
Agree, keeping split season is vital. The fruits for hurling are plain to see. This is the best IHC since probably the 1970s. But I also think we should alternate the codes each season.
