Didn't he come up against our current "intern" manager in Kildare with Moorefield? Don't think that went well for Ger … why are we always thinking the grass is greener "over there"? Maybe the answer is one of our own? I'm hearing Joe might walk away after his spell, if that's the case serious questions need to be asked of the County Board & the decisions they make or actually the decisions they don't make quick enough! He possibly will be managing against Carlow next season not in Division 4 but could happen in The Tailteann

The answer definitely is one of our own, and Joe is 100% the right man for the job. My post was just referring to whether we have a nominations process when hiring a new manager or not. If we do, it looks like the county board ignore it because Joe should have got it from the start but if they can't hold on to him now you would give up all hope.

Yeah, he's taking over Leix. They're really excited by the idea of being managed by a Carlow man.

Frightening to see the gulf between the big 2 and the rest tonight. 13 goals scored between them and none conceded. The gap is getting wider. Fair play to st mullins and mlr for keeping the standard high. What is going on in the other clubs? Dualclub1 (Carlow) - Posts: 292 - 11/07/2025 23:13:23 2625030 Link 0 |
Seamus Gahan from Grange doing great with Maynooth. Could be the man to take over? kerry4sam25 (Kerry) - Posts: 116 - 12/07/2025 08:48:35 2625041 Link 1 |
Maynooth lost two games from three in last year's Kildare SFC. Eire Og, Rathvilly or Palatine would hammer them. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 879 - 12/07/2025 13:33:33 2625064 Link 1 |
Agree. It was almost as if MLR said, after SM got 7 goals well we'll try match that. Both were in a different class. After seeing myshall beat Bagenalstown easily you'd wonder how huge the gap could be between top 2 and bottom. SM v Bagenalstown and Myshall v Ballinkillen next weekend. Scary stuff at the weekend just seeing the gulf in class between St Mullins and MLR compared to the rest. You would have to worry where is hurling going to be at in 10 years in carlow? Although St Mullins are an absolute force Marty James Paul etc arent going to last forever and seems to be less coming up than before for them. Will the gulf extend even further to just MLR or will the gap be closed. Also are the standard of hurlers we are producing getting less talented some of the aforementioned guys are one in a generation type players. I know hurling playing numbers are solid at the moment and there is more involvement from traditionally weaker clubs with less playing numbers but basically where do people see things going. With no disrespect to other clubs you could almost just have a straight final this year already I see lots of rangers lads were just on their hoidays in the earlier rounds and taking a well earned break but even with some of them gone they are still beating teams at full strength FearCeatharlach (Carlow) - Posts: 27 - 28/07/2025 00:44:27 2628475 Link 0 |
I was thinking the same last Saturday. On one hand it was an absolute pleasure to see the likes of Chris, James and Marty on show on lovely dry ground and the standard of their skill is breathtaking. They are truly a golden generation of hurlers and their skill would light up any county team anywhere at the very highest level. But they're not getting younger and there is no sign of anyone like them coming behind them. We seem to be producing lots of and probably as many or more than ever of good functional hurlers and that's a credit to the hurling clubs but without any genuinely top class players that I can see anyway. We're a small county so only so much we can hope for and our current level of top of Joe McDonagh, occasional Leinster championship is as good as it might ever get unless there was a major targeted investment in hurling in Carlow, especially in Carlow town and Bagenalstown where the numbers are high and the hurling tradition is there but the volunteers are simply too few to max out on the potential talent. You'd worry for SM alright given the low population and how they are continuing to struggle as a result at underage. MLR have better numbers and seem to have a good system of getting lots of youngsters playing hurling so should maintain their level, Chris apart maybe as he's such an exception but if you have the numbers you will get the generational talents eventually so there's hope for them maintaining their level I'd say. Myshall are a shadow of their former selves and numbers are a problem too I'd say but the tradition is there although the emergence of Burren Rangers has hit their numbers as the base is now smaller than it was. Any update on our football manager.Heard conflicting accounts at the weekend. County board still haven't nailed it down for next season apparently. Personally I think it would be a backward step if he doesn't continue. Overthebar53 (Carlow) - Posts: 378 - 28/07/2025 18:40:39 2628796 Link 0 |
He is confirmed for next year 100% not sure about after next year though.

I believe Murphy is being enticed elsewhere although his preference would obviously be with his home county. Big loss if that happens. We have had enough outside managers with no success. Turlough O Brien did an incredible job, got us promoted, beating Kildare, brought huge support out to follow Carlow. Hopefully they manage to secure Murphy. novalis (Carlow) - Posts: 318 - 29/07/2025 08:49:13 2628886 Link 0 |
I haven't seen or heard of that but that could be true we'll have to wait and see, However, when cake walked away Joe was approached, he was offered the job as interim manager for the remainder of the championship, there was no mention of beyond that as far as I am aware. Why was Joe not "ratified" as the new Carlow senior football manager with a given contract of 2 or 3 years as per normal instead of being installed as an interim manager. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3244 - 29/07/2025 10:59:48 2628940 Link 0 |

I am always flustered when I hear or read about the need for funding of hurling in particular areas and in our county of Carlow and commentators speak about investment and the need to fund and little is actually spoken about how ANY funding would actually benefit hurling on the ground. The emphasis of such discourse and fulcrum of such funding revolves around our county town and Bagenalstown. Tullow is rarely if ever mentioned as having a potential resevoir of talent !!! And what amount of funding would be needed, who would get it, where would it come from, how would it actually in reality make a difference ? And that is my question and difficulty. For me hurling is an incredible game requiring a player to develop the skills at an early age and practice practice and practice again to become a decent hurler Funding may provide equipment and coaches for a number of clubs - but does it or will it provide the people with the passion and expertise in urban districts to attract the young to become immersed in the game to such a degree to really make a difference! And finally in Carlow town, Bagenalstown Tullow and Ballinabranna and Old Leighlin - if funding was available what would the reaction be from the football clubs ? An older Catlow GAA person said to me lately that the biggest problem hurling has is football. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1883 - 30/07/2025 03:18:12 2629176 Link 0 |
I know what you're saying. One great investment to my mind though, as a starting point for spreading the game, is hurling walls, but they ain't necessarily as cheap as you'd think. Hear me out… Funding can and often does fall into a proverbial black hole, with little tangible - I.e., it can be hard to gauge its success or otherwise for 5-10 years or more. There was a time when there were handball alleys in a lot of towns; and it wouldn't have been unusual to see youngsters using them for honing hurling skills. Probably the best place of the lot where you can practice completely solo; great for speeding up reaction times and getting a wristy pair of hands. Different angles, spins etc etc and you don't need a man to puc the ball back to you. As simple a thing as a wall, will be there in a 100 years time, and provides an initial platform at least. Chaps will pick up hurls of their own accord over time and start using them, even in the absence of coaches. They're an opportunity for youngsters and the planting of a seed at least to my mind. As an aside (and certainly not aimed at yourself) these conversations/debates often descend into a football or hurling squab. They shouldn't. We're an exemplar, given our size, for being reasonably competitive at both and actively promoting both, at inter county level at least. One should never be at the expense of the other, but the mindset should be to pull together, rather than against each codes. Over the last 10 or 15 years the crossover between the 2 codes is getting more and more apparent. Athletic Development, tactics, and team set up is converging in many ways. Obviously the basic skills are different though. The best way to grow the game in those areas would be to set up hurling nurseries in the existing clubs, and buy hurls and helmets for the schools and clubs in those areas, and have the young lads playing both as they get older from 4 and 5. Where funding would help is that it would pay for the hurls and helmets, there are starter packs available from the GAA also, but more particularly it would pay some GPOs to go into those schools and clubs to coach the coaches/teachers/parents, so that they were able to coach the kids better. Any of those kids who really wanted to play intercounty for Carlow would need then to practice at home, this is what makes the really good players really good, not what they do for a couple hours a week at their club. But they have to be taught the basics and shown what they need to practice at home in the 1st place, and games have to be provided for them by coaching and games so they can put that work into practice. If numbers weren't great in a particular area maybe amalgamated local underage club and school teams could be fielded? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16924 - 30/07/2025 09:38:29 2629196 Link 1 |
