Whoever the new chairperson will be, it is important to recognise that the chairman of the county board takes responsibility for a range of different activities and is it not just about the senior team. (Too simple an analysis by some when the senior team loses a couple of matches). Selection of minor and under 20 teams and a range other teams, development of Hyde Park, fundraising for the Dermot Earley Centre of Excellence and a wide selection of other activities. They also have to balance short term finances/goals etc with other medium term and long term goals and plans. I would not be envious of anyone who takes on the job. A lot of work has been done in developing Hyde Park in recent years, Club Rossies have raised millions to help fund the development and underage is going well. Improvements are needed in certain areas but it certainly is not all doom and gloom in the county. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 739 - 19/05/2025 10:45:54 2610880 Link 0 |
You are correct, it is a multi faceted job and there is more to it than the senior footballers. However, i think in hindsight the senior set up got bit shafted and there is a feeling a golden generation of players have been let slip through the cracks. Counties like Roscommon really have to make the most of talented pools of players when we do get them. I've no doubt in the ambition of the players, Ciaran Murtagh, Shane Killoran, Ronan Daly, John McManus, Cian McKeon didn't come back into the fold and make sacrifices to exit at a group stage.

Also needs to be taken into account that he was appointed chairman in the height of covid (December 2020) and apart from the nonsense tweets about Leeds United that nobody but Leeds fans care about He has done fine as county board chairman IMHO. Under his watch he played his part in appointing all young energetic managers over our U17,U20 and senior teams. The underage teams have been ultra competitive picking up a few Connacht titles along the way. Davy Burke was given a 3rd year term. Year one we finished 3rd in Div 1 and missed out on a championship Quarter final by the skin of our teeth, Year 2 relegated back to Div 2 but reached All Ireland Quarter final. Year 3 so far has been promotion back to Div 1 and his championship will be judged on remaining games now and not what has gone before. Under our chairman talk about upgrading Hyde Park was finally put into action and the COE will soon follow I believe. Yes we have Mr Mulryan to help out but that's mainly to keep us afloat and without the outstanding fundraising work we would be in trouble and we do not have the resources of some other counties to stock our management teams with top level coaches. That doesn't always prove to be a success either as seen with our neighbours Mayo with one of the most expensive and stocked senior management teams but too many cooks is spoiling their broth. The Chairman of the Board is a voluntary role and it consumes a huge amount of the office holder's time. I agree that progress has been made on a lot of matters under Brian Carroll's chairmanship. Progress on redeveloping Hyde Park, progress on the Dermot Earley Centre of excellence, both big projects. That said, the senior team is the gaa flagship of any county. And it has to said that the senior Roscommon team has underperformed expectations during the current chairman's tenure. The appointment by the County Board of Davy Burke as Senior football Manager was a gamble because his only previous senior inter county experience was with Wicklow. I know he won an underage All Ireland with Kildare but senior management is different gravy. The appointment hasn't worked for Roscommon. Despite the Tyrone win, I don't think there was enough there to extend the Burke tenure in to a third year. The County Board must take responsibility for a senior Roscommon management appointment that has not been a success. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2420 - 19/05/2025 17:58:07 2611093 Link 2 |
Excellent post. We're in a better position (non playing ) than we've ever been. The Hyde was a right slum a few years ago , we had an undevelopable field in the middle of nowhere to be a CofE, Owed Croker a fortune. Now the Hyde is much improved, have a CofE site (and an approved grant) with planning on the edge of Ros town and Croker debt cleared. Not a bad Chairmanship at all. PS I am not from Kilmore and am just on nodding terms with Brian. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2311 - 19/05/2025 19:07:25 2611115 Link 2 |
Anyone know the throw-in time for the Roscommon v Meath match? letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 739 - 19/05/2025 20:15:48 2611134 Link 0 |
It's Louth for Roscommon in the All Ireland minor quarter final. The wee county were the better team for much of the Leinster final but Offaly's tradition ground it out.The Faithful play Mayo next. Not sure if the dates or venues have been fixed for those games. Somebody also might know if Roscommon as provincial champions have home advantage for the quarter final or if it's a neutral venue. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2420 - 19/05/2025 21:57:39 2611176 Link 0 |
Offaly a bit like ourselves in U17 final with finishing strongly to win the title. Quarter final will be played v Louth on June 7th or 8th in a neutral venue. P.S on the previous post of yours. Burke's tenure wasn't extended to a third year there was a gentleman agreement in place when appointment that his term would be 3 years so this is his final unless the county board decide to extend for a further year or two. Neutral venue I think. Thought louth were the better team but Offaly never gave up. To see the Offaly goalkeeper at 16 years of age kicking 2 savage frees off the ground to clinch it for them was brilliant. Louth will be a very tough test for our minors they are a very big side but our lads will be well up for it and hopefully get the job done.
