I really dislike the term "third gear" in this context. Yes Corofin won easily but to insinuate that they could have stepped up a gear and won more easily is simply not true. Corofin were up for this game and played really well. When on top they controlled the game but I would suggest that this was Corofin at close to their best and not in "third gear". Not knocking Corofin but against St Brigids they didnt find the so called extra gear. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 955 - 14/10/2024 14:56:49 2574828 Link 0 |
Moycullen bet Corofin in a SF in one of the years they won it - 2020 I believe. It should be a cracker and easily the 2 best teams in the county. Moycullen certainly no ones favorites with their use of the "transfers" of players and outside management team. Mark McHugh added this year but they have a serious squad and with Sean Kelly fit and firing will be hard bet. Does anyone know the extent of the injuries to Connelly & Cooke etc. Getting to 4 finals in last 5 years is some achievement but they are against the thoroughbreds that are Corofin. What a servant G Sice has been for them but my god McCabe is some player with huge potential hopefully PJ just gives him the 8 shirt.

Moycullen bet Corofin in a SF in one of the years they won it - 2020" ...Incorrect. In 2020 . Moycullen beat Mountbellew in Final after MM had beaten Corofin in semi. In 2022 Moycullen beat Salthill in final. beat MM in semi. Again MM had beaten Corofin in QF. So i repeat the question , when did Moycullen last beat Corofin in knockout champo.. I dont know the answer, just cant rembember it ever happening anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 955 - 14/10/2024 16:13:44 2574861 Link 0 |
After all the excitement of the 2 big games in Tuam yesterday, it would be easy to forget the relegation of Caherlistrane one of the Oldest clubs in the Country est 1884. It is hard to believe how quickly they lost their form and how dramatic that loss was. Unfortunately I think the same fate awaits even bigger rural clubs in the next 2 or 3 years. Managers have very tough decisions to make when a team starts to decline. It is a very unpopular decision to drop long standing servants who have a gained much valuable experience over the years. We all remember how long it took the public to forgive big Jack for dropping Liam Brady. But in persisting with the old guard, except in the case where a player is still involved with the County, (Conroy for example) or, on the very rare occasion when a player really is well worth their place in spite of advancing years. Only 1 such player is currently in existence in Galway in my humble opinion, Gary Sice, who will be 40 in a few weeks time. Choosing the experienced veteran over a young player may buy an extra year or 2 of retaining current status, but it prolongs the time required to rebuild by 5 to 10 years. Killererin, over 50 years in senior were too slow to make the hard calls, resulting in 2 drops in grade rather than 1, had they acted earlier. Milltown are playing the same game with a few seasons and I cannot see them escaping the drop inside the next 2 years. Tuam who it could be argued are unlucky not to be in the final are another team who have held on too long to the "senior players". I hope they act now as they have a big pool to choose from. Hopefully the new rules, if adapted, will benefit younger, more skillful players, over those adapt at the "process". Anyway good luck to the Queally's, they gave us good days over the years. giveitlong (Galway) - Posts: 1258 - 14/10/2024 16:14:01 2574862 Link 0 |
I know they did. I said I wasnt having a go at Corofin and of course they played brilliantly in Croke Park several times and did themselves and the county proud. Its just the term "third gear" and the suggestion that a team is only strolling through a game , half or three quarter trying , is simply not true. Corofin were at their best. Very impressive and won easily.... but not in third gear. Its just the expression I dislike , and its disrespectful to the opposition, who happened to have a very bad day yesterday.

I think you need a proof reader before you post 1. Moycullen did not beat Corofin in a semi 2. McCabe is not a number 8. Must be Pat Egan you referring to? anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 955 - 14/10/2024 16:25:43 2574868 Link 0 |
Patrick Egan will be a big player for both Corofin and Galway in the years ahead. Still very young and has a bit of filling out to do but he's definitely the real deal. With Paul Conroy approaching the end in a Galway jersey at least it's important that some young midfielders start putting their hands up. Like Egan and Shay McGlinchey. Completely Different. There are no families living in the area where the club was based. Liam Sammon was from beside where The Pucan is!!

No harm for you to proof read either. Yes Moycullen bet Corofin is 2022 1-13 to 1-11. And yes apologies Pat Egan what a player should be galways no 8 for next decade.

Over used term at this stage also. Corofin's attack and attacking play is regularly talked up by pundits but the actual strength and focus of their team under Kevin Johnson is defence and holding teams to low scores as already seen in this years championship Oughterard 0-8,Claregalway 0-9, Tuam 0-12,Killannin 1-7 and yesterday 0-5 v Salthill. Moycullen will need goals to crack the defensive set up Corofin have in place. Nine goals they have scored in their 5 games so are capable. That was not a semi, that was a group stage match. Corofin were beaten by Mountbellew moylough in the next match, and MM were beaten by Moycullen in the semi. https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/132324/first-time-football-final-pairing-as-moycullen-and-salthill-knocknacarra-advance systematic (Galway) - Posts: 119 - 14/10/2024 18:18:23 2574909 Link 0 |
Also this one: Moycullen beat CG in the qtr. MM beat Corofin. https://m.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/peter-cooke-inspires-moycullen-to-date-with-defending-champions-mountbellewmoylough/42053344.html systematic (Galway) - Posts: 119 - 14/10/2024 18:21:52 2574910 Link 0 |
Wrong again my esteemed colleague. You need to read my posts as well as your own. I clearly stated in my question when did moycullen last beat corofin in knockout championship. The game you alluded to was a group game in which both teams progressed....hence not a knockout game. Corofin progressed to QF and were knocked out by MM who subsequently lost to Moycullen in semi. So i still dont know when Moycullen last knocked corofin out? I assume a second apology will be forthcoming?

You all have bits of truth as is par for many on this form. Moycullen, Oughterard ,Corofin, Spiddal Naomh Anna and Tuam made up group A in 2022 in which Moycullen were unbeaten so Moycullen did beat Corofin but not in a quarter or semi final. No tears please you are all right.Nearly!

I posted 6/7 weeks ago that Joyce will be bringing in Dessie Dolan as a forwards coach once Westmeath appoint a manager. Matthew (None) - Posts: 1035 - 14/10/2024 20:31:13 2574945 Link 0 |
The lads that won championships with Fr Griffins were from the city centre where there are now no young families. They reared families in Renmore(Martin Newell) and Salthill(Liam Sammon). The next generation are probably in Oranmore, Barna, Moycullen, Claregalway. That's just the way it goes, not the fault of the clubs that lose players.
