True because Wexford and Antrim are relegated to 2nd tier hurling.

You wont be playing Antrim because they are back in the Joe Mac next year. And I'm just being optimistic about our chances in the Park :-D

Rightly so! Next year seems a long way away, right now I'm enjoying our U23s camogie All Ireland win over Cork!

Was a good win against the odds! Enjoy the pints! I was only answering a post saying all ye had to look forward to for the next 10 years was beating ourselves and Antrim! Plenty of hurling to enjoy between now and when we meet in the Park next year! You could have a few new faces by then also, as likely will we. There's not much between Dublin, Galway and Wexford. I expect younger players will be introduced in Galway next year whether that means an improvement or not remains to be see.

Wont happen. They will play some young lads in and out in the league in the muck with no backing . Back to the 2017 crop again for championship. Black&White26 (Galway) - Posts: 11 - 15/07/2025 14:09:31 2625842 Link 1 |
It won't mean instant improvement. But you'd be hoping the young lads will step up in the 2nd/3rd/4th years. I know that's what I'm hoping for ours.

Galway United FC in association with Connacht Hockey can confirm that planning permission is being sought with Galway County Council for a multipurpose sport training facility in Mountain South, Athenry Kew (Galway) - Posts: 253 - 15/07/2025 15:23:19 2625869 Link 1 |
Was the Mountain South in Joe Byrnes time?

I dont this so. That's going back to the end of the Celtic Tiger period and it's eventual bust (circa 2006 to 2009) which would be in the period of the previous chairman's tenure.

We'll only be fielding 6or7 players in next year's championship so? Quite challenging, you'd imagine.

My point is young players are not being backed and are just swopped in and out of the team/panel for each other. Dont expect a different result if you are doing the same thing each year. Back the youth and bite the bullet for once. Nothing to loose at this stage. Black&White26 (Galway) - Posts: 11 - 17/07/2025 14:17:16 2626259 Link 1 |
They weren't swopped in and out at under20 level of course, but they still failed to progress to the business end of that grade, which isn't a good sign traditionally for Galway hurling. Stretching from 1972 to 2011, Galway have managed to field a lot of competitive and winning under21 sides. Our recent season showings in this grade wouldn't entice anyone to 'bite bullets'. Fire bullets, more like.

I get your point but the younger players have to be backed now or we will have nothing in 3 years time. I thought that was the agenda of this management or am I wrong? Black&White26 (Galway) - Posts: 11 - 19/07/2025 11:40:24 2626520 Link 2 |
Fintan destroyed Phelan in the county final? That never happened anyway.

They are being backed. It's mostly the 2018 under21 side they need to beat out anyway, not the 2017 allireland winners that you keep harping on about. In fairness to the 6or7 all Ireland survivors, imo they're all still there on merit this year. David Burke probably the only one that could be questioned realistically in 2024-2025, and I'd imagine that management liked having him on board in 2025, if only for his leadership and experience at this stage. I'd be surprised if David doesn't retire from intercounty before the 2026 season commences. Who'll replace what he brought 2012-2025 is the question that Henry and MD haven't found the answer to. Agree, nobody has come along to compete with the old guard for their places, which is scary as players lose a step by the age of 30. So having 6 or 7 players north of that is not ideal. Limerick will be in this position either next year or year after with many of their players. I liked and respected most of what this Limerick group done so interested in how this plays out. Like Galway not much underage success since the pair of U-20s so its going to be similar to where Galway where/are. Now back to Galway; either we havent had the talent coming through or we have had it and we have not harvested it to a level that they can complete with the existing players for places. With the population of hurlers in Galway and the number of clubs/schools I find it hard to believe that we cannot get some level of raw material to work with. We have two universities teaching sports science, medicine and performance, a professional rugby team we can learn from regarding S&C, fitness levels, diet and injury prevention, we have steady sponsorship and if taught the skills and strategies of modern day hurling we could at least be competitive. But right now the approach to harvesting the talent is all wrong and failing the fans who spend their hard earned money, the players and the senior team.

"nobody has come along to compete with the old guard" Because the old guard are always selected come championship. Case in point this year, Whelan, concannon and k cooney. All played terribly throughout the championship, very low individual scores... All start and never dropped. BigBàsMan (Galway) - Posts: 174 - 20/07/2025 14:55:10 2626637 Link 1 |
