I guarantee you would not get all the players on board if he was to come back. I'll leave it at that.

Just what the doctor ordered. We need to 'lose' players straight away. If 2024 highlighted anything, it highlighted that. The 2024 squad was clearly at nothing, and going nowhere.

Except we need to keep the right lads. Anyway it won't be Donoghue. There will be enough naysayers to stop that from happening. Let Kenneth Burke have a go with a long term project. Young manager who is already proven in massive club games. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 790 - 07/07/2024 16:25:14 2557417 Link 1 |
I think MOD can stay in Clarinbridge or Dublin or wherever......I'd take Davy Fitz in a heart beat!

Any rumors or rumblings about interviews or candidates for the Galway job or will they just wait til after the All Ireland to get started? Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2255 - 11/07/2024 13:21:40 2558373 Link 0 |
Cyril wants Davy. MOD won't return. Darren Gleesons named mentioned. Kenneth Burke mentioned here. This is my take on it. Davy for the here for the now and won't do anything to bring on underage. MOD probably won't invest 4/5 yrs to rebuild it from the ground up. Gleeson won't and shouldn't get interviewed that's my opinion. If Burke goes for it then it's all in for 5 plus years to retool Galway hurling. The rebuild has to start by competing and winning at u20 level and get a conveyor belt going to the senior team. Short term is out this is a 5 year project to make us competitive again. Second or third fiddle in Leinster is no good to me, I'm getting too old and tired watching the same scenario every year. Money and resources into u20 level or I'll be dead before we win another one. 2maroonjerseys (Galway) - Posts: 88 - 25/07/2024 15:30:58 2561533 Link 1 |
Sounds good. It's funny how we are so good at Minors then it all fades away. Where's the disconnect?

Doesn't sound good at all. Donoghue knows that pipeline better than any of these contenders. If he doesn't fancy it, I read that as a vote of no confidence in the young talent in the county. It's no wonder. With 1or2 exceptions, our standard at under21/20 isn't being mapped compared to the majority of Munster counties for the last decade and more.

I just can't see Kenneth Burke getting it, after what happened with Shefflin, the county board are not going to risk taking on another rookie who has not managed an inter county senior team. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 795 - 25/07/2024 22:05:23 2561609 Link 1 |
I think we skipped a generation with the minors and u20s henry invested in bringing through the 2019/2020 minors whereas o neill and MOD didnt really bring anyone through, theres a missing pact from the 2015 minor up until the 2019 minors as for the sake of being on the panel and training

From what it looks MOD and co just want a team capable enough just handed to them like what happened in 2017, disappointing that he wont put the hard years into galway, maybe he knows there isnt silverware to be won for a few years so he wont return, davy fitz is familiar with the galway club scene regardless of people not wanting him, davy was involved with tommie larkins when cyril was involved the past couple of years, i personally wouldnt mind davy fitz. Ken Burke is a good upcoming manager who will get his crack at it at some stage but id like for him to get another of years of intercouty experience at minor/u20 before hes thrown into the deep end

Expectations, pressure and probably not preparing them better to make the jump in grade. Just because you won a minor doesn't guarantee they'll automatically make it as U20. More intense prep needed spend the money on them.

It seems to me that the intensity in Galway was applied to the minor prep. You had A teams and B teams and Maroons and McDonaghs, vast volumes of minors being graded, and challenge matches to bate the band. Then they move to u21, where squads like Limerick Clare and Waterford seem to up it 4 gears from minor prep, and in mad contrast Galways's u21s seemed to be far less intensively prepared than they were 3 years earlier as minors. resulting in them rarely cutting the mustard at the grade since 2011. I wouldn't mind but the chickens came home to roost in 2024, with those feeble threadbare efforts from the senior squad in the Leinster championship.

Time to start looking and learning from the neighbors

Or learn from the Minors since it seems to be our strongest level. Sigh.

It's highly unlikely that MD will leave the cash cow that is Dublin hurling when you are looking at a 6 figure sum each year. Is Mattie Kenny a good option as he has IC experience and would bring a hard edge to our play? Also there should be very few of the players from Cunninghams's time involved in 2025 so not dealing with a legacy conflict between players and management. The county board seem to big up the current U20 manager but I am not sure he should be considered based on inability to win at minor level even with what was considered above average squads, no progress shown at U20 level this year, not being tactically astute and has an embedded sweeper system mentality. There also seems to be favouritism with related players who are not quite up to the level required. OhIWouldYa (Galway) - Posts: 5 - 04/08/2024 12:32:04 2563759 Link 1 |
Did Mattie Kenny bring a hard edge to Dublin's play? I dont think they were any better at the end of his term in charge than they were when he took over. Mind you, MD is probably on the same flatline with the Dubs but I suppose the money helps.

Club championship starts next week and theres still no appointment made. Co Board probably were focused on football final but surely making an appointment before the club championship had to be prioritised. The new manager should have been given the job and let keep a close eye on the club championships because we need a vast amount of players, not just u20s coming up but theres players who have fallen through the cracks and have plenty to offer. Anyone have an update? Galway456 (Galway) - Posts: 109 - 04/08/2024 19:09:05 2563816 Link 1 |
