Replying To Kew:  "I agree totally. I thought perhaps they needed funding for casement park but that will never be built now. The only other explanation I can think of is the inclusion of the ladies? I heard the GAA totally miscalculated the cost of incorporating them into the GAA. They are more then doubling expenses while not increasing any profit. They will also have to provide and spend on new facilities. By all accounts it seems they signed up to something they cannot provide."
My view is that the organisation is increasingly driven by professionals whose bottom line is income.

Which is fair enough but the GAA is not a private company owned by shareholders and its job is to preserve and extend the national sports, not to potentially put that at risk by devoting more time and resources to making money from other sports and events.

We survived and grew strong when the state was either hostile - pre 1922 - or did little to fund us. That is a relatively new phenomenon. State and corporate dependency is seldom good for the long term health of any former voluntary body.

Replying To Viking66:  "True. What have attendances got to do with it anyway? If there were only 4 Irish GAA teams playing in a similar set up to the URC I'm sure there'd be better attendances at the GAA games. Fact is GAA is way more popular in Ireland than rugby. Comparing the 2 at any level is like comparing apples and oranges."
Not a right comparison either especially talking about if there was only 4 gaa teams. It's an Irish only aport at elite level

Not going to argue gaa is more popular bar a few exceptions. Tv wise rugby and soccer internationals and occasional provincial matches will get higher attendance/tv figures but gaelic football is ahead

Replying To GreenandRed:  "There was very little competition from other sports when All Irelands were in September and GAA still didn't market the finals too well. Almost no competition from other sports in July. I agree with the breakneck speed but not the timeframe when it suits many club and county players to finish in July. They put too many games into too short a time. Keep the timefrane but have less games, longer breaks between games for players to avoid injury. Players and coaches should dictate this. Not the GAA or supporters and definitely not us 'experts' online."
Players don't need longer times off between games at inter county level especially if it holds up club players.
The inter county players training and playing load is managed very well in peak inter county season that they can maintain the schedule they put in
It's the training load not time frame between games that causes injury reduce training sessions not time frame between games

That's the point though. Provinces play teams from other countries. What are attendances like at top level AI League Rugby club games? Which would be a fairer comparison to our intercounty games? And what are the relative TV viewing figures for them?

Club ail games can't be compared to inter county at all.
They don't play on tv. Streamed by clubs or irfu only

Difference I see in support is Leinster have a 12 county base and Munster have 6..can't compare support for rugby and Gaa on that basis..all Gaa support comes from one county for a team not a province like there is in rugby..a huge difference also is ticket pricing which rugby have got right, the more central the ticket the higher the price..if im right, terrace tickets are 25 or 20 euro which is very reasonable..Gaa could learn from that..

Not me anyway.
I don't need to lock rugby's arse to try and feel good about myself.

You clearly are a bit bitter especially with this type of reply as you're so dismissive of the sport trying to make yourself look "cool" without any knowledge of the sport

The novelty of Munster playing Leinster in Croke Park and the history behind it is a big selling point, rugby season doesn't clash with any other sporting events in Ireland and it's very diluted as there's only 4 teams to follow.

Leinster might have 12 counties, but Leinster Rugby doesn't represent a lot of them outside of a portion of South County Dublin. It certainly doesn't represent me. Where I work in Dublin you would never see anybody in Leinster apparel or talking about it, nor where I live in Kildare.
That said when I lived in Limerick you'd see Munster jerseys on everyone, people were mental about Munster rugby (in a good way), a lot of people I've me from throughout the province of Munster would have had some level of interest in Munster rugby compared to the equivalent in Leinster where so many people would have zero interest in Leinster.
Munster rugby always hit me as being a more down to earth kind of setup, sport of the people so to speak, as opposed to Leinster rugby that always comes across to me as a bit high falutin and elitist.

Bon I wouldn't disagree with you, what I was trying to say was with all the counties involved in 2 provinces, tickets will be sold more easily..yes Munster rugby was always more down to earth..what would you think of the pricing situation??think Leinster had tickets very reasonably priced to for the champions cup in croke park..

Numbers of clubs a d kids playing in those clubs show large enough numbers are interested in the sport

You clearly have little or no interaction with people involved in the sport ad there's thousands involved In the sport across leinster as down to earth etc as in munster or anyone else.

That would be my view as well to be honest.

Incidentally Wexford wanderers are based on the same grounds as my GAA club. Just a bunch of lads dressed in Ralph Lauren sneering at you carrying a hurl from their SUV like you're a dinosaur shouting look at them "goys" even though they could be a farmer's son from tacumshane

Ormond you do live in a rugby bubble to be fair and even someone like me who loves rugby and played it points things out to you it does over your head. You tried to debate with me about playing numbers and numbers of clubs in Connacht when you clearly didn't know what you were talking about. You instead stepped away from the thread if I remember correctly.
