Micheál Donoghue is being linked with a return to the Galway hurling hotseat after stepping down as Dublin manager after two years last night.

Donoghue was initially appointed for three years, but has opted not to see that out. He guided the Dubs to this year's Leinster SHC final which they lost heavily to Kilkenny after knocking out Galway along the way.

That defeat for the Tribesmen proved to be Henry Shefflin's last game in charge and there is now speculation that Donoghue could replace him, seven years after he led his native county to All-Ireland glory and five years after he last managed them.

In a statement, he said: "I have informed the Dublin County Board that I am stepping down as Dublin Senior Hurling Manager.

“I would like to thank the panel and backroom team for their tireless work over the past two years. I was very fortunate to work with a very talented panel of players and I look forward to watching their progress over the coming seasons.

“I also thank the Dublin County Board officers and staff for their support and help. And I also want to acknowledge the support of Clubs across the county and supporters during my tenure.

“I wish Dublin hurling every success in the future.”
