Kellie Harrington is the toast of Ireland after retaining her Olympic Lightweight Boxing title in Paris last night.
The 34-year-old cemented her greatness by defeating China's Wenlu Yang to join Pat O'Callaghan, Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy as the only Irish athletes to retain an Olympic title. Her success guarantees Team Ireland a record four gold medals.
Among those roaring Kellie - who announced her retirement from boxing afterwards - to victory at the iconic Roland Garros tennis arena were fellow Dubs and GAA legends Michael Darragh Macauley, Kevin McManamon, Sarah McCaffrey and Noelle Healy. Armagh's All-Ireland SFC winning manager Kieran McGeeney was also in attendance. Eight-time All-Ireland SFC winner Macauley, who was also ringside for Kellie's semi-final bout, knows the double Olympic champion well and the positive impact she has on her community from his work in Dublin's North East Inner City as a community sports engagement manager.
Indeed, he was part of the committee that organised the big screen in Diamond Park for last night's historic fight.
