Kilcoo began their Down senior football championship defence in winning fashion last night by seeing off Loughinisland on a 0-12 to 0-9 scoreline in Liatroim.

Bidding for their sixth successive Frank O’Hare Cup success - a feat which they completed previously in 2016 - the Magpies were pushed close by Loughinisland who trailed by a point at the first quarter stage before going in at the break trailing 0-8 to 0-4.

The second-half saw the holders needing big performances from Shealan Johnston and Miceal Rooney in attack, as Rory Mason, Aaron McClements and Paddy Morgan all sent over a brace of points each at the other end to keep the heat on Kilcoo until the last whistle.

Earlier in the day, Carduff were 1-8 to 0-6 winners over Glen in a game were county man Daniel Guinness’s goal helped ensure the 2020 finalists’ triumph, while Friday night saw Ballyholland recording a 2-9 to 3-4 victory against RGU Downpatrick in their respective opener.

Four more fixtures are down for decision in the opening round of the Down SFC this weekend and can be seen below.
