Connacht U20 HT Sligo 1-5 Galway 1-4 Galway not helped by a mysterious black card to Costello that even the commentator had no idea what it was for. Galway chasing the game from the start though. U20 FT Sligo 2-9 Galway 2-8 Galway's septic record at underage continues. Sligo win the game with point in injury time. After Sean Dunne air kicked an open goal chance with a couple minutes left. Thought Galway were pretty good against Mayo last week. I don't think they were very good in this game. Galway keeper gave a goal away against Mayo last week with a terrible kick out. Made another mistake this week that cost Galway a goal in this game. Came out for a high ball and missed it. Sligo player punched the ball into the net. Over the past 4 or 5 years at underage I'm guessing Galway are probably 4th best team in Connacht going by results. Have been overtaken by everyone apart from Leitrim. Serious problems ahead. Defeat for the U20s by a point. Decision making not good such as tap over free to go in front and went for two pointer and missed it, Other goal chances 2nd half went wide and saved. What is the story with the new rules and under 20?There is supposed to be a hooter yet the referee has not used it in Galways last two games and has blown up both games as Galway were attacking for levelling scores.There is either a rule or there isn't. Our Development squads from u17 down are not up to the standard. The quality of coaches is poor but also the coach to player ratio is at least 30 to 1. What are the development officers doing to recruit quality coaches from clubs to help out ? Are we putting enough GDOs in schools ? I know for a fact there has been quality dual players who have favoured the Hurling as the development squads are run more professionally. 13/14/15/16 year olds are no fools, it's not good enough to throw out a ball and tell them to go play. On a side note I think the S&C side of things is a positive with the introduction of Setanta but our skill levels and game IQ is what needs developing. Our underage football set up seems to be on the slide. The talent is there in the clubs, but there is something wrong at county level. Not good enough. The Development squads of hurling v football are interesting to watch. Hurling is out ahead now. Hurling are trialling all the young dual players first and selecting squads before football are even getting going. Also, this Galway Town soccer feeder team malarkey, as a development path for Galway United, has many of the most talented, multi code playing young sportsmen taken in with pipe dreams of becoming professional soccer players. Once these 14, 15 and 16 year olds 'sign' with Galway United, they're, let's just say, strongly discouraged to persist with other codes. Some brilliant young footballers are being taken out of the equation for football for both club and county. It's ridiculous of Galway United to tell these young men not to play Gaelic games for club and county, and its putting people off supporting them. They should change this policy and there needs to be a bit of honesty with parents and kids about the likelihood of their Johnny playing for Liverpool! The stats tell the tale. There are 22 million registered youth soccer players (u18) globally. That may be a very conservative number. In La Liga in Spain, of the gifted soccer players that make it into those top flight teams' academies, just 4% have made it through to play for those teams. And just another 6% of those La Liga dev squads go on to play at any professional grade in lower leagues. In England, the FA reported just 0.5% of players under 9 years old that are signed by professional teams eventually go on to play for the first team. So less than half of one percent of those kids already gifted enough to be called into a Liverpool or Arsenal or Man U academy actually make it. The chances of Galway Town / Galway United bringing through a player that can have a well paying career in soccer are minuscule. Goalie didn't look comfortable kicking out the ball and as you say cost them against Mayo and sounds like it wasn't much better last night. You could tell very early on they were off and once you are and give other side foothold hard to change the flow of game. 14 was v good hard to credit he didn't start first couple of games as was excellent as sub too.. As others have said some crazy decision making towards the end by the U20s but they will learn. Taking the free out after being given 50m, easy to criticise but he had the wind. Equally when Lonergan was through on goal just fist it over. Dunne wasn't expecting the pass. That's 2 weeks in a row 2 high balls have led to goals and last night was at a bad time as we had just scored our goal. Roscommon beat Sligo by 9 so we are really up against it next week. Top goes to the final, 2nd and 3rd get the semi and 4th and 5th last year played in the B comp Philly McGuinness Cup although I'm not sure if that's still the case this year smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 480 - 03/04/2025 10:28:34 2600288 Link

The County Board made missteps with both the Minor and U20 managerial appointments, particularly at the Minor level. The feedback emerging from the Minor camp regarding the manager is deeply concerning. Given the strength of the U16 development squads in recent years, they are certainly not to blame for any issues.
