Cecil, who passed away on November 30 aged 77, was a household name in horse racing circles. Predeceased by his sister Olive just four days earlier, he started out as a jockey, riding The Pooka in the 1972 Grand National, before enjoying a very distinguished career as a trainer.

Paying tribute to Cecil, who is survived by his wife Carol, Deputy Willie Penrose said: "Cecil was one of nature's gentlemen and I knew him very well over the years. He was a brilliant farmer and horse trainer and was a great family man. Cecil had close links with the Ballynacargy GAA club and was very loyal to the clubs down through the years, always willing to support teams."
