Corporal Gavin Carey of Grand Parade, Mullingar lost his life in a tragic drowning accident in the sea near Bundoran, County Donegal on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016. His body was recovered on Sunday, August 28th. As a serving member of the Defence Forces, the 28-year-old had served overseas in Chad was due to be deployed in South Lebanon. In preparation for this, he had been in Finner Camp undertaking a course. Gavin grew up in the village of Milltownpass, where he was a member of the local GAA club. A minute's silence was observed in his honour before Milltownpass' IFC match against Tubberclair in Mullingar.
