Fogarty, Sean

Former Athlone and Westmeath footballer Sean Fogarty of Glynwood, Baylin, Athlone passed away on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2016. An exceptionally talented forward, Sean was on the Athlone senior team for more than two decades and had the unique distinction of winning eight county senior championship - in 1956, '57, '58, '59, '60, '65, '71 and '73. Fast, tricky and extremely inventive, Sean's contribution to five of the famous six-in-a-row of SFC victories was massive and he went on to capture a total of 15 championship medals with his club as well as eight Feis Cups. He won junior football championships in '69, '75, '76 and '77 and was on the minor winning team of 1954. Sean also gathered two junior hurling championships and a Vocational Schools All-Ireland medal in 1956. Even though he won so much during the course of an extraordinary career, perhaps the most notable thing about Sean Fogarty was that he was always a true gentleman both on and off the field of play.
