Carried an injury for most of if not all of last year. Could clearly see it in some of the Donegal games. He was there every other year for Cloughaneely so of course he's going to be a loss for them.

It'll have a big impact on them I'm afraid. When available he was a huge asset to them. Sad to see him leaving. But in fairness to him if he was offered a big job in Dublin it was a no brainier. He's a young lad Who no doubt taught long and hard about it and felt it was too good to turn down. Wonder will it effect his county chances I can't seee it.

Abbey through to the McRory cup final. 14 of the starting 15 from one club. Some achievement.. Has to be a record. greenfan (Donegal) - Posts: 588 - 25/01/2025 16:55:31 2587473 Link 0 |
Massive achievement especially considering I'd imagine every other school in the competition has a much bigger pool of students/players/clubs. Truly a special group coming through for Four Masters

No coverage from Donegal GAA on what was almost one of Donegal hurlers greatest victories. Shame on them BaileCrann (Down) - Posts: 58 - 25/01/2025 22:28:09 2587535 Link 0 |
Looks bad when Donegal men wouldn't travel to Kerry when Armagh Ladies travelled to Tralee and beat Kerry Ladies who are All Irelabd Champs. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 458 - 26/01/2025 09:19:08 2587578 Link 0 |

If Donegal refused to that they would have automatically lost the game. I'm not sure where that narrative has come from. It is a terrible day down the country with a risk of flooding. The health and safety of the players is paramount and the authorities in Croke Park made the decision in the best interests of players and supporters. themaddog (Wicklow) - Posts: 140 - 26/01/2025 11:14:09 2587608 Link 2 |
It's magnificent achievement for The Abbey. I was looking around at some of the other teams in the MacRory Cup and it would appear that there are outsiders from the schools there "helping" as part of their paid county coaching jobs, or such. The Abbey I believe got zero help from the county and that's the way it should be, but it should be that way for all the schools in the competitions. Massive Congrats to Abbey VS. I think it would have been very unfair if they'd have been beat. They won the McLarnon and Paddy Drummond last year and those players had earned the right to play in the McCrory. I'm not in favour of the amalgamation at all in schools football. No harm but it's bad enough when Tyrone schools are complaining about South West never mind Donegal people internally. The amalgamation has allowed players from the west and south west of the county exposure at high level in football, which can only be a good thing for Donegal. The northern schools in McRory are essentially Gaelic football academies where schools are serviced by up to 15 clubs often from more than one county, South West was represented by much less than that in terms of clubs. Best of luck to Abbey in the final.

The focus of concern was on the number of combined students within the amalgamation that South West Donegal had to pick from, the number of clubs of which students are members of is irrelevant, its purely the massive pool of potential players. I'm not against having a South West Donegal amalgamation, if anything I would be in favour of expanding this approach across the whole County if it helps, but surely the number of students has to be a factor? Problem Jason has had is injuries not downing tools. He was immense a couple of years ago when winning the intermediate. He was exposed to too much too young and it took it's toll physically and he wasn't the only one. The irony is that he is going to a club with connections to the one who overexposed him who also declared Donegal are going to struggle over the next few years. Very disappointing for everyone at Cloughaneely who are really struggling on the player front between this, injuries and people moving away.

Well done to Abbey for making the final. Hopefully they go and win it now. I like your idea of other areas/schools in the county forming amalgamations also. It would progress Donegal underage football and I think in general that's the idea of this. It's quite common amalgamations, a Derry combined team entered the Mc Rory this year also. It's happening in Connacht every year also. It gives players a chance to compete against the best about. In regards student numbers, South West were at no advantage to my knowledge. I think they had roughly 900 boys to pick from when you add up the numbers in the schools. Majority of teams from Tyrone, Derry etc in this competition would have a lot more to pick from and most of their players are head hunted after their equivalent of Junior Cert. Again, Abbey is the exception really with their lower numbers but if you're basing it off the majority of teams, SW were on a level playing field at best. Organisers look closely at the amount of students you can pick from and the amount of clubs you can select from. Interesting to note Abbey are up against Maghera who have Chrissy mc Kague in as a full time paid GAA officer in the school and who is in with this team. I think it's a good thing the county board are trying to be proactive in addressing underage county issues, and the idea of amalgamations, to get close to northern schools attendance figures and level the playing field, within the county can only be positive.
