I actually totally agree. It is even more ridiculous in an ameteur sport, imo. They should be marketing these players front and centre, giving squad lists etc. Doing some of the stuff in the lead up to All Irelands all year long

The team for Sunday was published in the Independent Friday night. No mention of it on the Galway GAA website or on Galway Bay FM. Sometimes one wonders is there a deliberate policy to treat supporters with the mushroom treatment. SixtiesKid (Galway) - Posts: 336 - 25/01/2025 10:48:29 2587439 Link 2 |
Wouldnt think ye will have many hurling games in july going on the last few years.

Good to see Rory Burke get a start tomorrow. Big potential. Lohan as well at wing forward has been going well in challenge games. A win against Tipp would set us up nicely, especially as we only have two home games. You'd imagine everyone in the division is expecting to beat Wexford so it's these 50:50 games that will decide league placings. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 812 - 25/01/2025 17:57:57 2587480 Link 1 |
Jesus lads. Just seen the team named for the tipp match. Some of the lads on the 15 shouldnt even better near a Galway panel let alone the first 15. Where are we going? I've also heard Kieran hanrahan was dropped from the panel- the classiest and silkiest corner back in all of Galway last year. You can't carry everyone on the panel. Haven't heard that Hanrahan is gone but it wouldn't be overly surprising. You'd imagine Grealish and Morrissey are the starters at corner back with Shane Morgan next in line probably with Oisin Salmon who has played really well in challenge games. Sean Murphy is very young but looks a nailed on future county full back and so is probably worth having in and around the squad this year.

Who will take the frees for Galway tomorrow? Redzer99 (Waterford) - Posts: 89 - 25/01/2025 22:41:22 2587542 Link 1 |
Would imagine it will be Kevin Cooney although I'd prefer to see Donal O'Shea on them.

If we can't carry everyone on the panel how is Murphy there. He's not even close to Kieran hanrahan as a corner back. Remind me how much clarinbridge conceded against the Loughrea in the championship in two games? Yet no Loughrea player is starting. Morrisey hasn't hurled all year so the club championship obviously means nothing with Galway. BigBàsMan (Galway) - Posts: 75 - 26/01/2025 10:38:31 2587598 Link 2 |
Why would you want Loughrea players playing already? They were going full throttle until early January. The more rest they're given now the better the chance that they might have something to contribute later on running into the championship.

1)Loughrea were finished since Dec 15th. A over 6 weeks ago. 2)Loughrea players have no experience playing with Galway (hard to believe) considering reaching the knockout stage of Galway club hurling for the last 20 odd years 3) age profile of the the lrea players involved is very young. Early 20s. They're hungry and they need experience. BigBàsMan (Galway) - Posts: 75 - 26/01/2025 15:00:21 2587686 Link 2 |
3-25 to 2-16 (and our two goals were gifted) against a makeshift inexperienced tipp team. I'm going to double down on no.4 Murphy not ready for intercounty hurling. Is he even 70kg ? We need to be realistic here. Galway looked desperate today. Second best all over the pitch. No service to Whelan. I would have serious question marks over midfield and defence. They're not mobile enough or good at basic defending. Midfield is a problem also. We have the forwards of they get the service. I don't see us going anywhere this year. Sad reality of where Galway hurling is at present.

I wouldn't go on just a game in Jan in PS as a benchmark, on a team that finally we are looking to rebuild (should have started 3-4 years ago) but your points are valid. They seemed slow to the ball, maybe going through physical training this time of year will do that. What I was most disappointed with was the number of passes dropped, especially in scoring positions. I also saw a lot of hopeful hits from half back line into the forwards. The game has changed again and is more about pace and ball control as Cork have shown, but that team took 3 years to build. Willing to give Galway the benefit right now, I expect us to be in a relegation battle but would rather this than playing the older guys keeping it close in the league without a chance of doing anything in the c'ship. Rebuilds take time, but they have to be done and if we dont have the talent we will be in the abyss for an amount of time.

I won't go judging after today..it can only improve.Lohan looked half decent..have the players being doing big physical work?no first touch at all today and no bit of physicality.2 goals completely gifted and only for that score was very embarrassing..I could not get over how small the players were..what work is being done when players finish at minor level with gym work?also I know the weather has been brutal but the surface looked absolutely terrible, like grass had been bared with cutting..as I said it has to get better.. There will be lads to come back in that are more physical daithi burke, mannion bros, Shane Morgan will get a run probably after Murphy's display. But from a development point of view Galway neglected it for years and only now with des Ryan formerly of arsenal has a plan been implemented but unless you're taking gym work seriously it's very hard to put on size because they're playing aerobic sports and just constantly burning cals so we effectively wont see the fruits of that initiative for years. If you're small you need to put on mass nowadays or else you're going to be eaten alive. The ball control and decision making wasnt good today.

The issue here is that if you miss the window between 14-19 where the body is being flushed with natural growth hormone s then you will be years catching up in terms of S&c , unfortunately it willl take years to correct, the desire to win minor titles at the expense of long term physical development suited to the modern game has left lots of the talented players behind the curve and ultimately unable to compete physically, On a separate note , how was the pitch in such horrific condition compared to other pitches where games were televised??
