Speaking of 60,000 - I see the Leinster Football Final now has 60,000 tickets sold. Gonna be a cracking atmosphere. Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4246 - 09/05/2025 16:51:46 2607866 Link 0 |
If Longford made it there would be 61,000 at it. dolfos (Longford) - Posts: 131 - 09/05/2025 16:56:59 2607868 Link 0 |
No point in arguing with that deluded soul. However can you name any major sports competition that starts with the 8 or so top teams. There is very little wrong with the competition that we have now. Of course with more games the attendances at each are likely to be down. For one I go to games for the enjoyment of the sport not just to see the top 5 or 6 teams playing each other over and over. I doubt if many of the 30,000 attendees or the 10000+ plus that cant get tickets would swap Clones on Sunday for any hurling championship game. I could never enjoy any hurling game like I do gaelic football. In fact hurling would be 3rd or 4th on my favourite sports. Not knocking hurling but it is as much of interest to me as soccer or basketball.

Galway have won 2 All Irelands and maybe been in 2 more finals since they joined Leinster. What other team apart from Galway has made a final? Just Kilkenny. I am not sure are you agreeing with me but my overall point is Leinster is poor but Galway can compete and make finals. Just not great at the minute.

Just shows the dummy you are when you can't see the entertainment value and skill level that hurling provides its vast support… unlike the drab fare served up for years in football… It's little wonder they brought in a clatter of new rules and are soon to change the Championship format to try and entice people back to games… both of these things you said would never happen.. That wore well.. It's little wonder you put basketball ahead of hurling as there is very little between them the way football has became… You would be in a very very tiny minority with those preferring basketball to hurling…

My point is, although Galway have made Leinster more competitive (and better in my opinion); there has been no change in Kilkenny's dominance of the competition since they joined. For the record. Galway have won 1 All Ireland, and been runner-up 3 times (twice against Kilkenny) since joining Leinster. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2775 - 09/05/2025 21:47:02 2607917 Link 0 |
Galway have won 1 AI since they joined Leinster. They have only won 1 in over 35 years.

My mistake they lost a couple more recently. I forgot about the replayed Kilkenny final. My point again is for the 5th time. Will anyone bar Galway or Kilkenny reach a final from Leinster anytime soon? Honestly?

Football is not the problem. Too many games are. Look what happens when the best teams play each other each week. Absolutely class game. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8388 - 10/05/2025 20:01:01 2608159 Link 1 |
One swallow never made a summer but it certainly has you wetting yourself…. Hopefully more swallows will appear before the season ends….

Are you stupid? I still think football has structure issues with too many non competitive games. 4,658 Galway vs Wexford 5,200 Kilkenny vs Offaly Seeing as you are obsessed with Hurling and insist it draws bigger crowds because it's entertaining, can you explain why the people of Leinster don't seem too bothered about it? Its all just too packed. For most games you are getting a build-up of a week to a game. Can be hard for high numbers of spectators to keep the enthusiasm . Never mind the pocket with 3 games most months.. ponger (Cavan) - Posts: 555 - 12/05/2025 11:35:44 2608742 Link 0 |
You think Galway have 'given up' and Munster teams haven't. Bur why haven't they? The Cork Tipp NHL and MHC games of recent weeks established beyond doubt really, that Tipp aren't within an asses roar of Cork currently. And Tipp along with KK are likely the 3rd best teams in the country, in light of Clare's falloff this season. That's leads to one obvious conclusion, which is that despite the 'great' MHC and teams 'never giving up' in it, they're are only TWO contenders for McCarthy Cup 2025, Limerick and Cork. An improvement on 4or5 years back maybe, when there was only one contender. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 4141 - 12/05/2025 11:37:11 2608743 Link 0 |
My father made a point last night, he was in Parnell Park 2 weeks ago and said he had no appetite to be in Salthill on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. He said it was time to look at an alternative championship structure or swap Galway and Waterford in their respective championships? Galway border Clare, Tipp and Limerick is down the motorway. Waterford border Kilkenny, Wexford and Offaly is not a million miles way. Dublin and Antrim are a bit of a hike obviously. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1834 - 12/05/2025 12:44:42 2608782 Link 0 |
Not one bit but I'm afraid you might just be a bit dense… Hurling crowds have always been on the small side as most counties except Kilkenny draw from generally small areas of their county… Kilkenny/ Offaly would not bring a big crowd as it was a forgone conclusion… You are correct in saying football structures are wrong but that's down to the greed of the GAA when the crowds dropped to paltry amounts…. they just put on more games ( mostly meaningless ) to fool clowns into paying in… If Dublin had been in the Leinster Final there wouldn't have been 30k at it… The novelty effect brought the people out which was great.. The football championship won't start until it becomes knockout.. and anyone paying into games before that would need their head examined…!

But our Cavan friend said hurling is fine and has big attendances and all is great?
