Leapordstown is a solid structure, a bit like the FAI/IRFU indoor facility in Abbotstown. Could still get mighty high winds in Dublin to cause some damage. Pairc Tailteann scoreboard taken out only an hour from Dublin! I think the cost of building a solid structure dome in Bekan would have been prohibitive. The inflatable dome in Galway Tennis Club was ripped up in a weaker storm.

This thing was a complete white elephant. If the insurance pays out, I'd be up for taking the money and running.

Plans for a Dome in Derry at the Ulster University. To be used for a number of Sports FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2842 - 28/01/2025 17:14:44 2588226 Link 0 |
I would bet it was punctured by flying debris causing it to start to deflate and then get ripped apart.

These are questions that they will have to answer.

That's a complete nonsense. The facility was in use regularly and booked out 6 months in advance.

In what way was it a white elephant? Facts only please.

A once in a life time storm you mean. The dome is just one part of the complex so games will continue there.

That's one thing I thought it could do? Deflating it in advance of bad weather would be an idea for the rebuild. Alternatively let's build it in Salthill…it won't blow away or be flooded there and it's not "in the middle of nowhere" and accessible for all.

Maybe everyone is looking at this wrong. What we should all be looking at is the plastic dome part as being a wearing part of a car, like tyres, a part that will need to be replaced every so many years. Then cost it accordingly. No poster has said how much this part cost, or will cost to replace, but if it is the case that it cost 1 million of the 3.5 million, and it lasted 200 weeks, that's 5000 euro a week. That's not great value. So if it is to be rebuilt, more thought should be put into windbreaks, like a double row of trees on the western and southern sides, maybe some sort of temporary close mesh netting to protect it while they grow, basically examine ways of making it last longer.

Hugh Lynn Connacht GAA PRO gave a detail account in our local newspaper. including stating John Prenty and his team worked through the night and stayed until 2AM. "the images from the Centres CCTV on Friday afternoon were chilling, In less than three seconds, the dome began to shift. The Skin of the structure shook, then with a soundless burst, it collapsed. It was gone just like that." The Escape route was destroyed in an instant and I shudder to think what could have happened if the team had been caught under it. The headline could have easily have been "four dead" instead, we were left with "dome destroyed" Hugh much like Mr Prenty sound fairly confident it will be re-built I'm not so sure myself given the high building costs nowadays and will be much harder to get it insured. The West is littered with fallen trees at the moment. Thousands of people without power because trees have blown down on wires and piles everywhere. Most people won't have electricity for another week so I doubt if they will plant trees along the dome

Sad to see any GAA facility be impacted like this jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20740 - 29/01/2025 19:41:12 2588415 Link 0 |
I've seen entire plantations flattened. Some of the comments around the storm in places less affected or not affected at all has been disgraceful. If it was the east coast the army would have been called in.

I see its being called "Notre Dome" in some quarters.

Trying to assign blame is fruitless. The question is was it rated for the conditions that occurred. If it was then someone one has responsibility or insurance. If not then rebuild the same ? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result ? Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2920 - 29/01/2025 20:41:01 2588425 Link 0 |

I see nothing but begrudgery here and not surprised that some are gleeful it was destroyed. My experience of it is hundreds of children loving attending go games and development panels from Connacht getting top class coaching there. Can't wait for it to be built again and I'm sure there will be lessons applied regarding the structure. We'd have nothing across the Shannon if we didn't go ahead and build it ourselves such as Knock airport and the foresight of the great Monsignor Horan. Once in a life time storm, sorry that isn't good enough, if you are building a structure - particularly one of that cost what this project did, you risk assess and quality assure the project to withstand adverse and unusual weather events. In essence you take the worst storm of a life time and you multiply by at least 5 in severity and you make sure your structure can withstand that. Clearly this wasn't the case. Another case of vanity, ruling substance. Thankfully no one was hurt, but as per the Connacht chairman comments there was a potential risk to life. Given the above, I don't what I would take for some to say, hmm maybe it wasn't the cleverest idea. The argument that our tent wasn't a stupid idea, the weather was just bad just doesn't cut it.
