Some Updates On The Football Review

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Most of the changes are now known

1. Extending the championship into August - not in 2025, but will go to Congress in 2025 to see if there is an appetite for an All Ireland on the August Bank Holiday.
2.Changes to the structure in Football - likely to be progressed to change round robin in football - likely to go to Congress in 2025, or potentially special congress in December.
3. Rule changes - more "sand box" tests in October with rules to go to a special congress before Christmas. Proposals will be as follows:
(a) - amend forward mark to automatic play on and must be caught in side the 20m line
(b) - GAA offside - Each team must keep 3 outfield players inside both their own 45 and the oppositions 45 m line at all times.
(d) - Goalkeeper to be kept inside own 45m line at all times
(e) - kick outs from a wide to be brought back to edge of small square
(f) - 2 point scoring Arc

Maybe they should stop using a goalkeeper as well.....

Plan is for item 2 and playing rules to go before a special Congress in November 2024!

I believe a master fixtures list with an agreed overlap between club and county commitments would be a much better solution where you can get the best of both.

With Oasis taking up station in Croke Park next August its clear that the season is going to stay much as it is for another year at least. Perhaps county boards will be able to use that time better next year but I doubt it.

We are talking on this thread around declining attendances and the Football review. The review is happening because people have been voting with their feet and not getting out to matches in they way they did before. I believe the championship structure and the rush to play the games ASAP is really adding to this."
I definitely have a big preference for the finals in September. The problem is the players both club and county campaigned for the change and it was conceded by the powers that be. I cannot see any reversal of the calendar being imposed on the players, they just wouldn't wear it. The only way I see any move back is if it is driven by the players themselves and I see no sign of that at present.

I think you're right there. I hope I'm wrong about the decline in interest being as much a part of the new structure of the season as the playing rules. Maybe the rule proposals that come will improve the game to pull the crowd back in.

While I'm enjoying the Mayo club championships, this weekend the nation should be gripped by the second football semi final. I feel we've lost something. It's all over in a flash now. The GAA is about more than the actual games…it's the build up, the anticipation. This was our prime time to showcase our national games.

Croke Park is full four times this weekend but it's for Coldplay. It should be full of hurling and football fans.

I get the split season but as someone involved in club football I don't see any benefit where by the season has been shortened for club players. Club players are sitting around all summer playing league or secondary cup competitions.

A major rethink is needed.

Talk to the players. They prefer it the way it is and that's the important part.

Hopefully loads of them are gone to the Coldplay concerts and enjoying them now that they are able to plan their lives better with the improved calendar.

Previously it took us 4 weeks to play all the all Ireland semis. Playing each the same weekend makes it a better celebration of football.

Croke Park was full twice from January to August. And just who do you need to showcase our games to. Our clubs do a very fine job of showcasing them. As regards your comment that club players sat around to the end of July.......with your system they would sit to the end of September. People need to realise the most important stakeholders ie. the players want a split season,so get used to it. It is here to stay. Less of the whinging.

Hurling might have been a celebration but the football was more akin to watching paint dry….

Yes of course. These would've been much more enjoyable if they were staggered a week apart.

That's an excellent piece - fair and balanced - a good defence of the split season, while highlighting the cramped nature of the inter-county match schedule. A modest tweak to mid-August AIC Finals seems like a change most could agree with.

I suggested a 12-match regular season, encompassing both the league and "doubled up" Provincial SFC results into the 12-match set leading into a short concluding AIC Series, as a means of streamlining the season. The 12 matches compares well with the current 11-15 match count - League (7 or 8), Province (1 to 4) and Group Stage (3).

Anyone still debating the split season is an armchair fan with no involvement in playing or coaching. Or a journalist or pundit who is losing out.

There is not going to be much change to the championship structures in the short term.

A tweak to the round robin maybe.

The provincial championships are the problem and won't be fixed until Munster and Leinster amalgamate and have and A and B championship (Dublin, Kerry, Cork, Louth, Meath and Westmeath for next year) and the rest into Leinster/Munster B competition.

In order to give more space to the championship, it would be better to take the pressure off the league and reduce the number of games there.
Div 1A (6 teams), 1B(6), 2A(5), 2B(5), 3A(5), 3B(5)
Div 1 final, Div 2&3 (semis, final) - div 2 has relegation playoff

Use league to seed provincial draws

5-6 league matchs 1-3, provincial matches, 3-5 all Ireland/ tailteann matches

14 matches in 22 weeks

I really can't see the players the new split season are protecting. County players were flogged with games week in week out and in Tyrone anyway club players were flogged playing 15 matches in as many weeks finishing off with double fixtures 3 weeks in a row. Surly an extra month for the championship isn't a big ask. The build up to finals used to be brilliant for the youth at school, now some are away on holidays when the finals are on. Split season yes but give countries an extra couple of weeks.

If number 14 spends his time getting as far from the play as possible it frees up a player on his team. The other team will soon quit their antics.
