Replying To boxtyburgerbuns:  "Has anyone heard the cuckoo recently? Or are they all gone back to their winter homes?

The swallows will soon be departing as well, the gentle rhythms of summer with it's warm breezes and long evenings drifting into the chill winds of winter and the darkness of the light.

I saw a kingfisher on my walk yesterday, such a beautiful creature. It was swooping into the slow moving and meandering river catching little fishies for the dinner. A remarkable sight.

We are truly blessed to live in such a nature rich country for me"
We usually have swallows down here for a couple of months yet. You are lucky to see a kingfisher, haven't seen one in years.

Normally they would be long gone by now. I haven't heard one since early June. They were very prevalent everyday in May. I haven't seen a kingfisher for yonks. Used see them under the bridges on the Vartry Lakes near Roundwood.

There's a saying around here, the cuckoo comes in April, she sings her song in May, in leafy June she changes her tune, and in July she flies away. Haven't heard cuckoo in about a month. Swallows should hang on till September. You knew it was September when swallows gathering on telecom wires, heading back to school and all Ireland finals.
No woodpeckers here yet but have heard them in Leitrim and Westmeath.

The lapwing was another bird who used to make regular visits.

What birds of prey have you seen in Ireland? I've only seen the occasional hawk. I've never seen an owl or eagle, etc in the wild. Watched a Hawk snatch a Thrush just before it could escape into some low trees. I've never seen a Woodpecker as someone previously said.

I can never tell them apart tbh. I see some circling in nice warm weather on the odd occasion we have it high in the air catching the uplift of warm airflows. I assume they are harriers or hawks. Seemingly kites are to be seen also after their reintroduction. Some of the eagle family would be amazing to see, hopefully they thrive

I'm thinking them birds that circle and ride the heat currents are probably Peregrine Falcons.

Plenty of red kites in the picking in the skies here. Really great to see the effortless way they can circle but still cover considerable territory while apparently just gliding. Plenty of buzzards also. Some barn owls. Seems like the buzzards spread south from Northern Ireland following the motorway expansion. Road kill was the bait. I was told this but I've no idea how accurate that is.

We had our 1st buzzard here around 20 years ago. There were 2 the following year, then 5 the year after.

Saw a large hawk picking off a roadkill hare on the hard shoulder of the road not long ago. Fast food!
