Would you not think putting someone with legs would be better on someone with no pace. Galway have lost with the new rules the benefit of having Kelly run AOS up and down field. Tommy conroy would be a massive addition back as we always struggle with him especially as McGrath has usually been good at tieing up ROD jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1456 - 23/04/2025 12:24:23 2603846 Link 0 |
Connacht GAA pricing isn't helping. Our form going into the game against All Ireland Finalists and having lost by 10 points to Monaghan and also lost to Meath,Cavan and only drew with Westmeath so a trip to Salthill wasn't very appealing to supporters and then had the option of not going and watching it on RTE, We are the same as every other county as in if form and mood is better a bigger crowd turns up. In 2023 for the previous Roscommon v Galway game and also a Connacht semi final 16,917 was the attendance and reason for the bigger attendance then was we have finished 3rd in Div 1 which included a league win against Galway and had just beaten Mayo in MacHale Park. Logic would suggest Galway should win this up coming final by a few points to spare but I would expect you'll be a lot better defensively against Galway than we were and you won't allow their fielders to catch the ball totally unchallenged. It won't surprise me one bit Mayo in full intensity mode find a way to win this Connacht title the odds alone will be a big motivation as will the manner of the defeat last year. Conroy takes 4 or 5 games to get up to speed since COVID. High scorer in club football. For me he has yet to play at a consistently high level like Ryan can I wouldn't they they'll risk starting him but won't be surprised to see him in the 15.

Indeed cost is a huge factor. Throw in the condensed season and number of games. Fans are now picking and choosing what games to attend. As for the Connacht final nothing would surprise me. Mayo could win or get well beaten. If we are going on evidence so far then obviously you'd back Galway all day but Galway turned the table on us in the past when we were hot favs. I'm hoping for a much improved performance. Mayo managements head on the line for this one. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11539 - 23/04/2025 20:57:09 2603929 Link 0 |
I always feel that Galway /Mayo games take on a life of their own like Cork/Kerry. CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 3862 - 23/04/2025 22:01:26 2603937 Link 0 |
You're not wrong there Mick. Mayo's performances against Sligo and Leitrim will mean nothing when it comes to the Connacht final. We were almost knocked out by Sligo last year, before going on to win Connacht and reach the All-Ireland. Mayo are a quality side with very strong motivation to stop our run in Connacht. Like yourself, no result would surprise me. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2277 - 24/04/2025 00:36:40 2603970 Link 0 |
Surely Ruane is the man for Conroy? Try get him running towards his own goal. I think Mattie's performance is the key for us. He played a central role in all our league wins this year. Has been quiet against Kerry/Sligo/Leitrim and the whole team suffered for it. He has a good track record against Galway in Connacht finals so here's hoping! We can't match the likes of Darcy/Maher/Tierney etc for height and fielding ability so we need to try hurt Galway some other way. I know he divides opinion but I think Eoghan McLaughlin should start wing back. Get the likes of Darcy trying to chase him. Eoghan is aggressive and a great tackler which will be needed to set the tone and get the home crowd involved. Hopefully any handling errors will be kept to a minimum. I wish people would stop bringing up players from the previous decade. As good as they were we still lost to (a much worse) Galway 3 years in succession from 2016-18. That's before you look into all the terrible performances in qualifier games. Underage success is somewhat relevant but it's only a small factor. What underage success did Armagh have in the last 12 years? The biggest factor in players development is the intercounty management team. We beat Galway out the gate in tuam during the 2020 league. It was men against boys. Who was the Galway midfield that day? John Maher and Cein Darcy. Both of those went away and came back better players. How many of the Mayo players that McStay inherited from JH have kicked on to a new level? I would argue none. Then you have talented young players like Callinan and McBrien who have stagnated and possibly regressed. Partly due to being switched around to different positions IMO. The good news is that things can change fast. A win on Sunday week and suddenly things are much more rosy. There's no team out there we're incapable of beating so a bit of momentum and who knows where the championship will lead us. MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 445 - 24/04/2025 08:28:14 2603983 Link 0 |
