With players like Hamil, Lavelle and McCaul to come back and then the likes of Mooney, kelly, Carey, McPhillips and Byrne getting a year's experience under them, there is plenty to look forward to. farneygael (Monaghan) - Posts: 314 - 07/07/2025 23:19:57 2624270 Link 1 |
Couldn't see it kicking off tbf, If young players are talented they will more than likely be play football and soccer. If you started a u12team for example it would take them a long time to be competitive and majority will throw the hat at it after a few hidings especially if they are playing sports they are competitive in.

What was the story in Truagh at the weekend, seen there was something like 11 or 12 minutes played at the end without an apparent massive injury. Deadballmerchant (Monaghan) - Posts: 14 - 08/07/2025 09:35:29 2624299 Link 0 |
Were Donaghmoyne poor or the Harps good? Apart from their slip up in Killanny, the Harps look to have found a lot more consistency this year Farney321 (Monaghan) - Posts: 2 - 08/07/2025 17:50:21 2624455 Link 0 |
To be judged when championship knockout comes around. The leagues are glorified challenge matches for most. So many safety nets with the structure, takes a very bad team to get relegated from senior or inter, with the number of chances they get to stay up.

Yes looks like intermediate is a toss up between Blayney Harps and Carrick. Seems to be nothing between them all. And it's near time the 3 town teams got houses in order. Bar a 2 min lapse Blayney were well in control against Carrick but they lost o hanlon half way through. Looks like a Carrick v Blayney/harps league final at this stage updafaughs (Monaghan) - Posts: 69 - 09/07/2025 11:39:43 2624575 Link 0 |
Anyone hear anything about league finals taking place before championship this year? ScarnaMan1990 (Monaghan) - Posts: 38 - 09/07/2025 12:28:03 2624593 Link 0 |
This should be the case as most teams who make final end up having a provincial championship game upcoming and put out shadow teams

I thought most counties finished their leagues before their championships started. Makes sense.

The hierarchy in Monaghan have a fear that a team may win the league in intermediate and junior and hence not bother with the championship as they'll already have gained promotion. In Monaghan you get promoted via league or champ. One from each. You play same grade in league and champ always unlike most other counties

Thanks for explaining that udafaughs. In Kildare the league is played in divisions. There is no Intermediate or junior A league except for lower level junior teams and a reserve league and championship for the second teams of Senior clubs. A team can't be promoted via the league to play in the championship. There can be Intermediate teams playing Division 1 football and senior teams playing Division 2 football. In the championship the winners are promoted from junior and Intermediate and the bottom four in the senior championship play in a relegation playoff with the loser being demoted to Intermediate. lilywhite1 (Kildare) - Posts: 3045 - 09/07/2025 17:29:59 2624687 Link 0 |
Harps were just good in my opinion, were the better team for 40mins and always had that 4/5point gap, made a few subs and within 10 minutes were 15points up. Very similar to the carrick game. They have done what they have failed to do for the past 20 years and kept 2 or 3 waves of good players about instead of losing them so have a decent squad. Also takes a very good team to have the ability of just turning on the performance come championship time, The fact they are in intermediate would indicate they aren't that good! Not too many intermediate teams have the excuse that they are missing a slap of county players either.

My guess is it's so that there is still 100% everything to play for in the championship final in the event one of the teams is already promoted, I may be wrong though. Not saying it's right either, nothing worse that a team being knocked out early in championship and having to train for another maybe 2 months for a league final where the other team may already be promet3d and have a provincial game the following week and the league final turns into a joke game. Difficult one to handle the way Monaghan is structured to be fair and I like the structure monaghan has. farneygael (Monaghan) - Posts: 314 - 09/07/2025 18:27:40 2624700 Link 0 |
Not a massive fan myself, seems over complicated, have talked to players that don't have a clue what way it works going into the final games, so rather a league be home and away and top wins the league with championship beat and your out. Don't see the value in teams winning the league after finishing 4th. Was it 2/3 years ago that the bottom two teams had a joint total of two points and neither got relegated .

The league system in Monaghan has become a bit of a sham to be honest. Have teams finishing 6th out of 10 and still make the league qtrs. Also last season Tyholland only won one game in intermediate league and one game in intermediate champ but stayed up. Was very bizarre. Blayney qualified for league final first year down and had to wait 4 months to play it. So momentum was gone and lads had lost interest as they were knocked out of the championship early. League needs to be finished befroe championship. No team in their right mind would rest on laurels and not push to win a championship. The only factor would be if a team wins league but finished in bottom two of champ group. They'd be exempt from relegation then but that could be easily fixed by just having 3 teams play in relegation group then and bottom team goes down with the team who loses relegation playoff

Harps had a great team a few years ago who made a county final? What year was that? Beat us in a quarter down in Scotstown

2015 I think that was but it all fell apart after that Current manager had good success with Galbally and Mochtas Their team seems to be all extremely young, similar to Blayney so should be a good meeting in the league semi Farney321 (Monaghan) - Posts: 2 - 10/07/2025 13:50:39 2624814 Link 0 |
The cccc rightly take flack each year over the structures in the county.

The two quarter finals should be good games this weekend, clones are a decent outfit so will be tough for you. Probably tip killanny in the other game.
