100%. Kickout strategy was poor not just McCormack's kickouts. O'Sullivan was excellent as was Danny McCartan and Charlie Drumm. Was Brian Cooney injured ?

Who would you replace McCormack with? It seems like Jason Daly has been disrespected by the current management and may be leaving the panel. We've had decent goalkeepers like Fagan from Tubberclair and Martin from The Downs, but they were never given a proper chance by Dessie and other management teams, which led to their departure. Personally, I think the management is doing a superb job with the current crop of players, considering their limited experience. However, one criticism I have is the decision to bring on Kieran Martin and then take him off again - that move was puzzling. You mentioned there are too many passengers on the team, but who else would you bring in at the moment? Between retirements, traveling, and players opting out of the panel, I doubt there's much more talent outside the current squad that would bring significant improvements. We have three Under-20s on the panel, which shows how short of talent we are due to recent exits. Right now, Westmeath GAA is in a tough spot across the board. Between the hurlers, ladies' footballers, men's Gaelic footballers, and the senior camogie team, we've played 15 games and lost 14 and had a draw with Donegal. You have to ask where we're going wrong. Are the players getting the support they need from the county board, or are we simply out of our depth across all four teams? i know this is only Westmeath football trend posts but it seems across the board we're struggling. The usual craic on here.. you give your opinion and lads aren't happy.. correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the point of this forum was to give fans the opportunity to express their opinion. I would never give out about a lad giving their personal opinion

It was sarcasm, we obviously know who he means, he may as well have said. I'm not blaming the players, giving it a decent go considering how many we've lost. Just frustrating as we could easily have three wins

Matthew Whittaker also excellent today and we missed Jack Geoghegan's physical presence in second half. As I said earlier we're not a big side and he's a powerful player who would have been important in second half. He was unlucky with sending off, on a yellow and Cavan player seemed to wrestle him on ground, both got yellows which meant Jack walked. He's young and will learn, Cavan player probably targeted him on yellow. Results in division today don't help our chances as Louth now on four and Meath already safe and improving.

Wind a huge factor today in Mullingar and seemly across a lot of games played this weekend. We took advantage in first half and Cavan did the same in second half.We are not physical or probably big enough to compete for kick outs. The 4 teams we"ve played have all had big units in midfield and shorts kick outs seemly not on so we go long and give up possession. The younger lads put in a huge shift today but some of our more experienced players did not show up in second half when Cavan took control. We seem to be bringing on the same subs which have no impact whatsoever. I still can't understand. We have good players on the bench who need a run the likes of Joe Moran as I had said before not getting a look in. very good player going forward and a very good defender as has proved in the county final. Obviously management have their favourites. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The most inexperienced Westmeath squad for over a decade, with a new Management group has played Louth, Monaghan, Cork and Cavan. Desperately unfortunate to lose 3 of those games. This was going to be a really difficult league and so it has transpired. A few ground hogs in the middle third would be a definite counter to our lack of physical height but there are some players returning from injury and a few wins are certainly still possible albeit unlikely. Stay behind this Management and playing group. They have been infinitely better than many of us expected if we are honest. Today's match is certainly another that got away but they will all learn from it. johnnyh (Westmeath) - Posts: 12 - 23/02/2025 19:18:35 2592711 Link 2 |

Conor McCormack in the goals has to change, one trick poney with kickouts no vary, heard Ray Connelon shouting back at him at one stage after a few poor kickouts in a row. He always seems afraid to shoot which makes little sense naduntaabu2022 (Westmeath) - Posts: 10 - 23/02/2025 20:15:25 2592730 Link 0 |
Surely there has to be a player-over 6ft-playing within the county that can actually catch or field a ball?? Obviously McCormack in goal is told to kick long because with ever kick out all players push out forcing him to go long.We dont have anyone cabable of fielding a ball and when we do we automatically drop it and lose the loose ball.Midfield is killing us around all kick outs-Cavan today like Cork and Monaghan before went long with all kickouts and won the majority of them

What players have to return from injury is Nigel Harte injured he is a good tall strong lad maybe worth a try in midfield who else ???? our goalie is a major problem too kick outs a pure disaster Grandcanal (Westmeath) - Posts: 11 - 23/02/2025 21:54:15 2592777 Link 0 |
We seem to be comparing keeper's kickouts with previous years when majority went short and were retained easily, under the new rules that's not possible, kickouts gave to go long and therefore it's a contest, That makes Conor McCormack's job far more difficult, Brian Guerin is injured, Eoghan McCabe is injured, we had Sam Mc midfield today and it's not his best position, Cavan, Cork and Monaghan had bigger, physically stronger players than us. Conor Mc has played 5-6 games as a keeper, he should be given time. I asked on this forum a few weeks ago who were the club keepers capable of playing inter county? Trevor Martin and Jason Daly have opted out. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2028 - 23/02/2025 23:19:42 2592804 Link 0 |
I think the results so far are probably a reflection of the current squad and possibly even overachieving; with a full contingent last year we absolutely scraped out of Division 3 and performances were pretty poor; we've now gone up a level without approx 8 of that team and also a game that's faster and more open. I don't think the team that started yesterday would have won division 3 last year so let's be realistic; the current management by all accounts are very popular among the squad and have taken the training and coaching up a notch; I go back to a point I made before; we are losing the battle from 14-20; we have promising players at all levels in this county but it's on the clubs to provide S&C and look after them which is fine but there should be a crop earmarked now and put on the right development plan for the next 3-4 years that when they reach 19-20 they are physically able. We missed a trick with the current 23-26 age profile in this county I feel. The old guard; as good as they were; were probably given 2-3 years too much when younger players needed to be blooded. We now have a group of young lads untried and untested being thrown straight in at the deep end and they are giving their all and are just falling short which there's no shame in. The idea that players from certain clubs are picked based on their club is ludicrous; it's an outside management with no ties to the club scene. We called out for more variety in terms of personnel for years and now we have it and people still moan. I do feel some of those players could have been introduced 2 years ago when playing well for their clubs and they'd be better prepared for the demands by now. The fact is we may not win a game but I think the group are really giving their all and probably overachieving when you consider who's unavailable from last year. Excellant analysis there-fair play to you. This group need time and backing from the genuine supporters-they are the future and I for one have every confidence in them and their management team.

A county with no tradition, no structures, no training facilities and no fan base ( All absolute facts) are doing very well to bring every game down to the wire in division 2. ear2ground (Westmeath) - Posts: 119 - 24/02/2025 12:22:26 2592878 Link 2 |
