There are a lot of worrying injuries for the weekend. Seven players are unavailable, including Sam Smyth, Kilmartin, Nigel Harte, Senan Baker, Sam Smith, Adam Treanor, and I think Jack Murtough is still on the panel. Fighting-Cocks69 (Westmeath) - Posts: 41 - 24/01/2025 22:04:45 2587404 Link 1 |
Lads I have to say I thought we were desperately unlucky today, put in a great effort considering the amount of new players. Drumm, Gonoud, Guerin, Sam Mc all good, Luke Loughlin excellent apart from one crazy shot but he was our best man by a mile. I have to say I didn't understand starting Fionn O'Hara or bringing Danny Mc into the middle 8, thought he should have been on for Stephen Smyth. Also I'm not sure if Conor McCormack gives us much in goals, he gave us very little going forward and a few poor kickouts but I suppose that's to be expected. Have to say I thought they put in a huge effort lost to a flukey goal. Bluelake (Westmeath) - Posts: 200 - 26/01/2025 16:08:13 2587699 Link 0 |
Luke, Wallace and Sam Mc were outstanding. Guerin also did very well. Kevin O'Sullivan made a huge difference and you'd expect him to start next week. Matthew (None) - Posts: 1047 - 26/01/2025 16:30:23 2587703 Link 0 |
Luke was superb, Sam Mc immense, Ronan Wallace, Brian Guerin and Kevin O' Sullivan all very good, Charlie Drumm and corner backs solid, Ray Conn had some good moments but need more from him, Louth bench impacted more on the game, management must face criticism for starting Fionn O' Hara, not fair on a young player, hasn't played for his club in three years, better to introduce him gradually, overall a fine team performance and unlucky not to win or draw Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1982 - 26/01/2025 16:53:40 2587712 Link 1 |
Westmeath very unlucky not to get something out of the game today-2 great goal chances early in second which would of put Westmeath in driving seat but a much better attacking system than previous manager so hopefully they can put another solid in next week away to Monaghan. Super effort today in desperate conditions, Luke absolutely outstanding once again. Let's build on that A_Chairde (Westmeath) - Posts: 265 - 26/01/2025 17:38:04 2587729 Link 0 |
Plenty of positives today especially missing so many. The new rules seem to make the game for more taxing physically. Would be nice for Westmeath to actually release a squad list to see who's on the panel. A few more scoring forwards and we will be very competitive. Did I see Kelly from Miltownpass was on the panel today? Lakecounty94 (Westmeath) - Posts: 73 - 26/01/2025 18:13:50 2587743 Link 0 |
Luke outstanding today! Thought it was a very good team performance. O Hara and Gaffney looked off the pace can't see them starting next weekend. O Sullivan did well when he came on. Kieran Martin added nothing to the attack when he came on. McCormack in goal play well, he joined the attack a lot hope they can have some set plays in future matches that get him into places where he can shoot because he has a great kick on him. Interesting to see Whittaker play wing back and Wallace play wing forward, didn't expect that! Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 526 - 26/01/2025 18:16:59 2587744 Link 0 |
Really positive performance today, was fearing the worst and even after 20mins it looked dicey. Luke Loughlin with phenomenal scoring. Wallace also with some good scores. Thought Whittaker looked way further on than he did last year, nothing spectacular but looked confident and stronger on the ball, Guerin brought good energy to the middle but himself and Connellan needed fresh legs around them for the last 20. Lads, ye played very well and should have probably got at least a draw. I was talking to a local lad on the way in who thought Louth would win by 6 or 7. I told him it would be close and so it turned out. Your number 14 (blonde lad, don't know his name) is a lovely footballer and was a serious headache for our defence. moresthepity (Louth) - Posts: 238 - 26/01/2025 18:52:49 2587752 Link 0 |
Poor mistake by keeper at end, otherwise we would have deservedly beaten Louth. Keep going lads dec (None) - Posts: 291 - 26/01/2025 19:43:07 2587765 Link 0 |
The Conor McCormack experiment in goals didn't work today, one shot that dropped short doesn't justify playing a forward in goals and his kickouts went astray at crucial times. He deserves another chance as it's new to him but If he's picked for what he brings as an extra attacker then we need more. Jason Daly's kickouts certainly would have been better.

Definitely agree and I think a natural goalkeeper probably would have dealt with the goal.

No, he wasn't on it, but I heard he'll be playing with AIT against DCU during the week. Does anyone know what improvements are being made to the grounds in Cusack Park? Today, there was a huge crowd despite the weather. The toilets on the canal side were closed, and the ones on the Supervalu side were opened, but none of the lights were working in them. Surely they had time to fix these problems? Fighting-Cocks69 (Westmeath) - Posts: 41 - 26/01/2025 21:09:55 2587780 Link 0 |
I fully agree with this statement. Monaghan will aim to keep Luke to 2-3 points. Another weakness is that we don't have another known huge fielder in the air besides Ray Connellan. Johnny Lynam is a huge loss, and I hope he will be brought in when he comes back from his travels. I think our key men today were Ray, Wally, and Sam in the middle of the park, and obviously Luke up front. Brian Guerin impressed in his first outing for Westmeath. I feel they will need to bring in Danny or Lorcan Daly up front, as I feel Robbie Forde or Smith didn't pose any major threats up front. It was a solid first performance in the league, especially since many people had written us off coming into this game. I'm not sure what to make of Conor McC in goals. It definitely wasn't the day for him to try taking long-range shots with the weather and soft ground, but I feel he did well for his first outing in goals. He was very confident on the ball and well able to read the game at times. Fighting-Cocks69 (Westmeath) - Posts: 41 - 26/01/2025 21:16:43 2587783 Link 0 |
Happy with todays performance but there are a few tweaks to be made Jason Daly should be our goalie at all cost only for Luke and Ronan no other forwards impressed Robbie Ford and Whittaker not great and totally unfair starting O'Hara .. hopefully Nigel Harte will be back soon he has speed and strength and Sam Smyth Johnny Lynam too we need these lads back tougher games to come Grandcanal (Westmeath) - Posts: 9 - 26/01/2025 21:23:07 2587784 Link 0 |
I thought Whittaker was solid enough. He's still developing, but he had a huge work rate, got on a lot of ball, and did the simple things right. I feel he deserves another spot against Monaghan. We definitely have to start giving these young guys like Whittaker and others more game time, allowing them to develop and integrate into the panel, hopefully Scahill can get more game time next week.

Aside from the match today which was plated under terrible conditions, your pitch was in very bad knicj, but your facilities were absolutely abysmal. Not toilets on canal siďe, even though there was a decent crowd over there. The toilets on the stand side, had no lights at all and no hand dryer working. In this day and age is this acceptable, maybe in Mullingar!!! joej (Louth) - Posts: 1608 - 26/01/2025 22:40:35 2587799 Link 1 |
Totally agree the toilet facilities in Mullingar are the worst in the country and I have been to a fair few in my time the toilets next to the apartments are an outright disgrace can't flush them there leaking no proper driers no proper sanitizer / soap dispensers when it's raining there's a big pond at the door you'd want a boat to get through the water Grandcanal (Westmeath) - Posts: 9 - 26/01/2025 23:11:24 2587807 Link 1 |
People in Westmeath have been crying out for improvement in facilities for years. But a little bit of respect wouldn't go astray. I wouldn't dream of going onto the forum of another county and slating their ground. Given the weather the last week or two I thought the pitch wasn't too bad at all, all things considered. westmeathman99 (Westmeath) - Posts: 120 - 27/01/2025 00:26:35 2587810 Link 0 |
