Definitely should be a split club season in wicklow intermediate and senior hurling championships could be played off in 6-7 weeks would give intercounty footballers a good chance to have a break and get back going with club also would give more dual players or footballers who find it hard to commit to playing hurling time to play with their own club or on permission with a neighbouring club that hurls a no brainer I think from someone from a dual club

I see the u20 manager recommendations at the county meeting were not taken on board in order for the county to compete. He recommended that the u19 championship be run at an earlier time. I hear it's planned for December. What's the point in getting recommendations and not acting on it.

Rumour has it that the shelves in the archives of Wicklow GAA in federal are full of different reports commissioned over the years and never acted upon. But it's only a rumour, probably nothing in it.

When is the minor A final between An Tochar and Blessington being played? What were the u20 manager's recommendations - were the recommendations published? I'd be interested to read them if available to the public. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2016 - 25/10/2024 19:04:17 2576942 Link 0 |
Where is the miley cup going this weekend? What are your views? kodak13 (Wicklow) - Posts: 75 - 25/10/2024 22:16:20 2576951 Link 0 |
Minor A is on Monday at 2pm. Amongst the recommendations (from u21 management) was a request that the 25 u19 panel be got together in Oct / Nov as is the case in most of the more successful counties apparently, rather than months later. To accommodate this, the u19 championship would be need to played out earlier. This didn't happen obviously. It was a worthwhile proposal, in my opinion. . But, if I remember correctly, the former u20 championship was shelved for years ostensibly because the senior clubs wouldn't have some of their younger stars for the latter end of the championships. Some of the more prominent clubs in the county were the ones who were in favour of burying it.

Monday, I hope to go over and have a look seen blesso a good bit, haven't seen an tochar only against blesso in their match and blesso won okay. But I think it'll be tight. An Tochar may not be as strong as last year but they only lost to blesso this year. Wicklow People 26th June. Couldn't get the full article. Wicklow U20 football manager Paudge Doody made a passionate plea for all sectors of the Garden County to do more to help get players to a higher standard so as to be able to compete with the stronger counties in Leinster. With the talented U20 team losing out to Louth for the second year running in the provincial competition, Doody delivered a stirring review of the season, driving home a number of recommendations that called for the moving of the U19 championship to a different time in the year, improved S&C and more effort from clubs and county. I'm a bit like you in reverse, in that I've mostly watched matches east of the hills due to transport difficulties. I have seen Roundwood a few times but didn't see the one where they were beat, but I was told that one very influential Blesso player was the difference between the teams. The game should be a cracker, if both teams play to their potential - which I expect they will. I'm told that R'wood won all their other games - coming from behind in some cases. As Blesso lost a game or two - I think - on form we should have a fine display from some of the best young players in the county. This keeps begging the question, why did Wicklow not do better in Leinster ? Is our standard still so far behind the big guns in Leinster?

There are some posts regarding u19/u20 and minor A final that I'll have to read before I respond. I was at the senior final today and I thought it was a most enjoyable game of football, two teams going out to play constructive football and trying to win. No cynical play nor a dirty blow in the whole 65 minutes and no mass defences. Just proves that there is nothing wrong with the current game if team play it in the right way. Congratulations to Tinahely; I don't think any one except maybe some Baltinglass supporters would begrudge them their day in the sun. Baltinglass will be disappointed that they couldn't build on their six-point half-time advantages The wind played its part in the game; Baltinglass may feel that they should have had a bigger lead at half-time than they did. They probably lack that killer instinct to finish teams off in these county deciders. A poster on this forum has been singing the praises of Matthew Ging and shouting for his inclusion on the county team; on today's performance, I can see why. Today he produced one of the most outstanding individual performances I've seen from a footballer on county final day. It will be interesting to see if he is willing and is given the chance to push for a place on the county senior team in 2025. Finally, I commented earlier in the week that I couldn't see why these two teams couldn't go ahead and play on Monday if required. I'd like to revise this opinion, witnessing players cramping badly in the final minutes of today's final, there is no way that these players could have played another match of the same intensity on Monday. For this reason, I'm glad that one team won out today. Best of luck to Tinahely next week. I think I am correct in stating that they are away to Portalington in Portlaois - if this is the case, this is a tough assignment. Maybe the celebrations will be still in full swing at that stage. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2016 - 26/10/2024 19:25:18 2577068 Link 0 |
Congrats to Tinahely also from me. I've seen them a few times this year and their never say die attitude has stood them In good stead when the chips are down. I think young Ging was in or around the county panel but possibly was injured ?? I was getting snippets from RTE as the game progressed. The panel on there also brought up about how often our county champions are under pressure to make the first round in Leinster. They also questioned the 7 week delay in kicking off our internal competitions. They were saying that most counties work back from their provincial competition kick off to ensure their champions are not in the situation we invariably end up in. Not sure who you are trying to fool here, Baltinglass players, management and supporters all out on the pitch afterwards and stayed for presentation and speech. Very respectful considering the soft decisions that went against them in second half. Some of them quite embarrassing to be honest. Hopefully Tinahely can recover in time for next weekend, would be great to see a performance against Laois victors.

I'd imagine the non existent free out that Tinahely were awarded at the very end of the game. Can any of you that know more than me tell me what exactly that free was given for? Saying that Baltinglass did not deserve to win the game only scoring 2 points in 34 minutes in the 2nd half.

I attended Saturday's game as a neutral. I have no connection with either Baltinglass nor Tinahely. On this basis, I have to say that I would question some of the frees that Tinahely were awarded in the second half. At least 2-3 decisions were questionable and went against Baltinglass. This helped Tinahely maintain momentum towards the Baltinglass goal. Was this a contributing factor in relation to why Baltinglass lost? Yes. Was it the only factor as to why they lost the game? No. I think the two main factors why they lost the game was their inability to play against the wind. One caveat is that the wind was strongly against them in the second half and became increasingly strong as the game progressed. The main reason I believe Baltinglass lost was their inability to curb Matthew Ging. Himself and Eoin Darcy were Tinahely's main threat and they ran the show in the second half. Also, I thought Baltinglass's midfield faded as the game progressed which meant that Tinahely, quite rightly, pushed up on the Baltinglass kickouts and forced Mark Jackson to kick long; Tinahely won most of the breaks in that second half period. One final thing - why does it take so long to present the trophy? I can fully understand Tinahely's celebration as I could understand Blessington celebrating in recent years but why not present the trophy immediately after the game and allow the victors to go celebrate. I feel sorry for the team who lose and are forced to hang around for 10-15 minutes until after the presentation - the county board should insist on presenting the trophy immediately after the final whistle.

Made the Minor A today. A great, close game. In my opinion, Tochair were on top throughout most of the game, but like their seniors, they just couldn't convert dominance into scores. Fair play to Blesso, when they got a sniff with a few minutes to go, only 2 down, they went for it and it worked. All in all, a great way to spend an afternoon. Pitch seemed pretty good despite all the recent rain. Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1243 - 28/10/2024 16:07:22 2577353 Link 0 |
