Its quite shocking how bad our PR is tbh. I was keeping an eye out in local papers for information on county convention they usually do a fair spread on it particularly on the accounts and finances but absolutely nothing unless I missed it. It seems to be in autopilot at the moment. After hearing in national media about neighbours Mayo playing Monaghan at the weekend and Kildare playing Galway I'm assuming that our lads have been playing challenge games too? Any word on them? Yes and that's where the farce of all these rule changes will be really shown up…. God help the referees…. No wonder so many are jacking it in…!

A nerve? As I said they are fully entitled to be there. Nothing to report move on. Leitrim Gaels I hear have picked up a few footballers also.

Was looking a some videos on the new rules. My fear is the increased work load on refs but also the wedge driven between players and ref communica to prevent dissent...too many changes to bring new refs in but then the contradiction in adding so many things to track during the game. I can see a lot of issues after final whistle goes as it's the only time players can question ref without conceeding 50mts. For me the 3up at all times and the tap and go was enough to create a free flowing game. MrUnderhill (Sligo) - Posts: 70 - 06/01/2025 17:02:39 2584806 Link 0 |
Never said that….. only making the point that all these rules being introduced at the same time are go to do more damage to the game than improve it… Everyone with a brain knows something had to be done but this is far too radical… Dropping some of the silly rules ( forward mark and black card ) and enforcing the 3 up rule would have been more of a step forward and also help referees especially at club level….

I'd tend to agree with that. In my experience with refereeing in Sligo, like nearly all counties, many refs seem unsure of the existing rules let alone a heap of new ones thrown in together. I see huge controversy in the game for 2025 but hope I'm wrong. Changes were needed but even for the spectator, this is a lot.

I have heard nothing about challenge games but I assume they are taking place. I wonder how did the meeting go between players reps and the Co Board which took place a month ago. I hope all clubs sent in their player rep and hopefully they might trash out a deal on the fixtures

This year of all years it was a silly decision to ditch the pre season comps. The GPA spun it in such a way but evidentially these games are still being played just not highlighted as they're behind closed doors as much as possible. Mayo played two games last week.. I've heard Sligo have played a couple but didn't hear specifics. Think they played Longford in Marky Park the weekend. Did anybody passing knock in? There will be a lot of carnage for the first round of the league. Club teams are still playing the old rules for the conclusion of the All Ireland stages, then we have a significant number of players playing college football, also under the old rules but they presto everyone including the referee is supposed to be up to speed when the league starts. I would be confident of Sligo beating Offaly under the old rules but everything is so much up in the air that I don't know what to expect the last weekend of January. The GPA haven't come out of this very well. They wanted the pre season abolished but are happy for teams to commence training before the due date and to travel all over the country for challenge games.

Surely these challenge games are organised by the County team managers who are supposed to be under the remit of the county boards. Yes the GPA should maybe more vocal about it but players are not going to say no to a manager. McAvoy in Ulster slammed the GPA but still hadn't the bottle to name the counties that are breaking the training rules sligo joe (Dublin) - Posts: 823 - 09/01/2025 15:47:57 2585195 Link 0 |
FBD games was going to be played in the Dome and that environment isn't the best of prep for NFL game played in the wind and rain.

in my time following Sligo football, I have never seen us back up a good year with a better year.. maybe 2001/2002 SligoScot (Sligo) - Posts: 42 - 09/01/2025 16:48:36 2585212 Link 0 |
Promotion will rule us out of the Tailteann bar some major surprises in the provincial championship. You have to take each competition separately as they come when you're in that middle space on if you're inSam or Tailteann. Personally id sooner see us promoted and aim for taking Mayo and consider that major progress. Fail to get promoted then I'd be eyeing up a Tailteann Cup win as the next measure of success. Outside of either of those then it's not progression in my book. Agree with comments that FBD should have been retained this year above all years. Didn't hear anything on challenge games except that they beat Longford fairly handy but then again that wouldn't be any great shock as theyre in a poor state currently. We have had loads of occasions when we put a few good years together. 2023 was a good year and so was last year. I wouldn't have any line in the sand that if we don't achieve something specific then it's a failure. I would be confident that we could take Mayo and if we do we won't be in the Tailteann cup. I would love to be in that cup as I think we have a genuine chance of winning it. With no competitive game played under the new rules it's going to be difficult to see how teams approach the league.

Clare, Tipperary or Waterford will be in the Munster final, so if Clare don't get promoted, then they will take the place of one of the promoted teams in the Sam McGuire so it wouldn't be a major surprise for a promoted team to be in Tailteann

I've heard nothing from within the camp in terms of departures or arrivals. Is anyone playing well in these challenge games? Is Carrabine definitely gone for the year? Anyone else leaving or returning? johncreilly (Sligo) - Posts: 131 - 10/01/2025 08:37:04 2585295 Link 0 |
Tailteann is a good competition and we will no doubt go after it if we end up there, but if your league position got you into an All Ireland, or though perhaps unlikely, you turned over Mayo, would you not be more excited by testing yourself against the best in the country? Interested to know what people think? Also, I agree with some of the above sentiments, that there is a fear we could get a dose of reality in 2025 and out upward trend could plummet. Here's hoping that won't happen. johncreilly (Sligo) - Posts: 131 - 10/01/2025 08:42:20 2585296 Link 0 |
Best wishes to Coolera. They are outsiders like in every game they played. Cuala are also in unchartered waters. It will be a very close game. Hopefully they will win. eoinog (Sligo) - Posts: 1992 - 11/01/2025 12:04:42 2585468 Link 0 |
