Replying To Carlowrising: "It was Summer 2023 we beat Longford, although Longford could be the new Waterford by looks of it" Longford were in Division 3 that year. Bad season so far this year but they are the current Leinster minor champions so Longford will recover soon enough.

Replying To Onion Breath: ""The tedious bit was finding out low long Carlow is in div.4 without getting promoted."
Jeez that wouldn't be hard to find. Promoted three times in the last 45 years. Twice in the mid 80's and then recently under Turlo.
Remember though that during that time sometimes the league was just randomly drawn i.e. divisions weren't done on merit like they are now and you could end up with anybody so no county ever got promoted that way and then there was a revamp to 3 divisions, 1, 2 and 3 south and 3 North but we never got up, then it changed again to just two Divisions, 1 and 2 which were divided into A and B so for Carlow to get into the top 16 (Div 1) would have been a challenge but we nearly did it once when collapsed on the last day v Wexford after a great campaign under Cyril Hughes when a draw would have put us up but Wexford hammered us which was a huge blow as they didn't have anything to play for I think complacency caught Carlow that day.
So while we might not have got promoted often, at the same time we weren't always only playing Div 4/bottom 8 standard teams so you not always comparing like with like. One year we were in the same division as Mayo and Cork and we played both a couple of months after they had both played in all Ireland semi finals so a bit different to what we face now in the league." That's why I assumed he had to be trolling.
I think in 1997 we played Galway AND Mayo in the league. Totally different to what you'd face now.

Replying To CARPS: "Three times. 1983 and 1986 under Vinny Harvey and in 2018 under Turlough.
Cyril's team was in 1999, I think. That was a strong panel which got absolutely messed around with the four red cards against Westmeath.
After that, the county board wasted a decade with outside managers before Luke Dempsey improved things a bit.
It's worth nothing that in most of the period since 1960-odd, the league wasn't split into four simple divisions. We had various formats, like 2A/2B or even evenly matched groups. So some of the time Carlow would have shown Division Two or Three form, but it wouldn't translate easily to the current format.
I remember one year in the sixties we were in with Kerry, Cork, Kildare and Wexford (all very strong teams then) and I think we came 2nd or 3rd." That match against Westmeath was a catastrophe. We were on the up and the time and to my mind, it set us back years. Westmeath kicked on thereafter for their own golden spell. Am I right in saying that a replay was acceded to by the Leinster Council, but Westmeath dug their heels in? We were used as "guinea pigs" that day as Cyril Hughes rightly put it, "sent down here to practice on us".
Say what we want about our friends immediately across the Barrow, but Laois provided fair play in the 90s in the replay of that championship game.

Don't see anyone else back in. I'd say it'll be the TC before we see one or two more back on the team or matchday squad. I see choo choo is on the bench but he'll be an impact sub anyway as soon as we need him which could be early. Good to see Kevin Murphy starting.

The worst of the sendings off was a Carlow player barely putting his hand on the shoulder of a Westmeath man as they contested a high ball. As we gave out about the awarding of a free the ref reached for the red.
I've never heard a crowd so silent in disbelief.
Out of the reds only one was deserved, when our hard working midfielder mistimed a shoulder and sent a player nearly out over the fence.

The sending off you're talking about was Ken Walker's. It was an absolute joke. It was hardly a foul and wasn't even near being a yellow but the rules that the ref had misinterpreted was that any yellow for all personal fouls were to be given as straight red. Absolute farce. And no back door then so that was the end of our season. Sickener and it set us back years as we were ready to make an impact then. The players were there. We had the experience of the Eire Og lads with five Leinsters won and the young Blues were then emerging and won their Leinster shortly after. We had the talent then.

The Leinster Council voted to award Carlow a replay (in Tullamore), but Westmeath appealed to Central Council and it was over-turned. I remember it well.
There was a lot of goodwill for Cyril at the time. He was a great dual player for Carlow at a time when we struggled at both codes (incidentally he would have played football with Luke Dempsey).
What happened that day in Dr Cullen left a bad taste in a lot of mouths. A few of the players didn't really bother with inter county after.

Replying To Smokeless Red: "How was that tedious? Carlow have only been promoted twice to my knowledge. Although Cyril Hughes team of early 00's came mightily close to going up to the old Div 1, & had they been in what is now Div 4, would have been easily promoted" # Smokeless Red.
I used the word " tedious " where as I suppose I could have used "bland or motoneous." Tedious has a few meanings as you know.
Thanks for you post and interest.

I remember the Leix appeal as clear as day but don't remember the Westmeath appeal at all.
We did have a good team back then and it shows the madness of No back door for inter county players.

Best of luck to the lads today in Navan. I'm hoping Joe Murphy coming in can give the lads a bounce & we put in a hugh performance. Meath ultimately will be too strong but I believe we can put up a decent show & make life difficult for them. Hopefully a decent run in the TC will set us up nicely for next year. I believe every footballer who is good enough to play senior for Carlow will make themselves available under Joe next year & promotion from div 4 will be a realistic goal. On Leinster Championship Sunday I always feel like a kid again and look forward to throwing on the jersey & heading to whatever venue we are playing. The Sun is out & the car & kids are ready for Navan. Hopefully we get a performance. On anther note we'll done to the minor hurlers yesterday but another defeat to for our u20,s. Losses to Kerry & now Kildare in that grade doesn't argue well for the future

Only 3 of the 24 from the 'big two." Three from MLR and Zero from St Mullins.
Would anyone with a knowledge of the grade currently be able to explain that please? Seems very strange to me that Mullins have nobody on minor or u20. I know it's a small area, but they always produced a couple for the county at each grade. They fielded minor and u16 teams last year. Also three seems very low for Mt Leinster Rangers compared to the past decade or so.

Can we blame cake for this one and move on.. Meath looked a very very average team, but never got out of second gear

And Meath remain the only team Carlow has never beaten in the Leinster SFC.
The wind killed any chance of a decent game. The lads did okay. I suspect it would have been much worse if the manager hadn't changed.
As an aside point, I'm not sure I like this new Gaelic Football. To score 19 points, but lose by 14 seems absurd. And it seems relatively easy to get two pointers with a strong wind.
Some of the best games of years gone by were low scoring, but had a lot of contests for possession.
Carlow-Laois in 1988 was a cracker. 3-5 to 2-7.
