Therein lies the issue, if they spent less time in the gym and more in the field kicking the ball we might have better more interesting spectacles. As a man once said to me "You can't kick a kettle bell over the bar". peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1030 - 04/10/2024 09:27:00 2572994 Link 1 |
This would be a valid point if we were still in the 70's

People often say the quality in the 70s wasn't good. Is it any better nowadays? Players might be fitter and a lot better conditioned but 2 yard handpasses to a teammate is hardly riveting fare. Fair enough there was plenty of stray kick passes in the 70s but at least there was a kick pass. They're like hens teeth nowadays. And it's turning people away from attending games. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1030 - 04/10/2024 12:21:04 2573019 Link 1 |

players up until the late 90s couldnt kick the ball off the ground for the most part I mean just watch the 1992 games, some terrible kicking, especially the semi against Mayo Manus was the only good striker of the ball in that team I would say the quality is by far better now, and I dont get the obsession with kick passes. The game is not as bad as people make out eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 87 - 04/10/2024 22:58:59 2573104 Link 1 |
What. players cudnt kick the ball off the ground. What about Martin mc Hugh. Declan bonner. Marty Carlin all brilliant kickers. You obviously didn't see much football in them days so I don't know how you can really comment on it. As for today's football it's an absolute borefest ..

You obviously weren't born when McHugh kicked one off the ground from about 60m in Breffini in 92.

Clearly you never saw Martin McHugh kicking

Enjoyable weekend of club finals, Termon much too good in the Intermediate, Jamie Grant was excellent for them. Their reserves were also very good in their win over Burt. In the Junior, I was surprised at how easy Muff had it in the final, Caolan McColgan was quality and Kevin Lynch was a handful at full forward. The game of the weekend was the Junior B final between Convoy and Carn. A really great and exciting game of football, I thought Carn were going to win it in the end after roaring back into the game. Hats off to the No.14 for Convoy, carried his team through that final, think he scored 2-5/6 of his team's 3-8. Roll on next weekend's finals now! dgcrusader (Donegal) - Posts: 43 - 07/10/2024 10:31:30 2573414 Link 0 |
When was the Eunans training session? If it was on Saturday Rory wasn't involved. I watched Corduff V Inniskeen in the Monaghan Championship on Saturday evening on Clubber. Rory was on the sideline for Corduff. They were beaten, so he's probably finished with them now for the year. I wouldn't expect Rory back with Donegal, he's a sponsorship no go area. Derry County Board quickly found that out. SouthOfTheGap (Donegal) - Posts: 703 - 07/10/2024 14:50:00 2573475 Link 2 |
The Junior final was decided after about 10 minutes, Naomh Padraig blew carn away and Carn looked shell shocked and were unable to recover. Some great long range points for Naomh Padraig and the ball into Lynch at full forward for the 1st goal was a thing of beauty, the finish was very good also.

Naomh Padraig are a club doing things well. Good underage set up, didn't they win a minor A championship a few years back? I assume a lot of those lads are still involved and they're reaping the benefits. A good solid league campaign in Div 2 followed by a comprehensive Junior Championship win. Well done to all involved. Best thing I saw at the weekend games was the father of the Muff player who died recently leading the team in the parade carrying his son's jersey. Everyone associated with Naomh Padraig should be really proud of everything their club has done recently to honour his memory including their victory in the final yesterday. It's what GAA clubs are all about, the heart and soul of the community. greenfan (Donegal) - Posts: 577 - 07/10/2024 22:07:07 2573549 Link 4 |
Well said. Too often we get caught up chatting about tactics, management, players, this & that. The GAA is a pillar of the community up & down the country. There are countless instances when local GAA club members have rallied around those in times of need. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9518 - 07/10/2024 22:55:51 2573559 Link 2 |
how many attempts did they need to hit one? Jesus the semi against mayo and the final itself has some terrible shooting Manus Boyle and Declan were by far the best shooters on that team. I'd rather watch todays game then the hit and hope and no skill of the 90s or before. eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 87 - 07/10/2024 23:47:33 2573566 Link 0 |
you listed some of the greats, i am simply referring to the other county player back then, sure, each county had maybe 2-3 great players who could hit a score off the ground or from distance out of their hands, but most couldnt especially in the early 90s

Yeah I take your point but the game is a lot different nowadays. Full backs and corner backs were defenders in those days, they weren't expected to be able to kick scores or even kick pass. The midfielder was there to contest kick outs, win ball and give it to the forwards. The "possession is king" mantra in today's game was non-existant back then. Back then the ball went forward as fast as possible and it was up to the forwards to battle for it and win it. Was that better than today's game? The stats men of today would probably need a long lie down if they operated in the 90s. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

At least we called them Footballers in them days. It's athletes that managers wants now. I would love to see some of these athletes take a good honest hit from Rambo or molloy.. when men were men
