Yea, Roscommon could do with someone like that who has a great football brain and knows the standards that are needed if you want to become a consistent top 8 team. Is this Jack O'COnnors last year? Tomás Ó Sé for the senior and Donaghy to take over u20s?

Ya think Jack O'Connor said this was his last year but that could change. Cian O'Neil could take it to. Kerry won't find it hard to get new manager.

O'Neill seems more suited to a coach/no.2 role. He was a bit of a disaster with Kildare (apart from Newbridge or nowhere episode). Has the search started yet or are we waiting to see who's left in October once again? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2558 - 17/07/2025 11:40:25 2626235 Link 0 |
Whoever we appoint you'd hope the county board has some sort of long term strategy for the county team now that the COE has permission. How far away are they from getting going with construction? As someone said in a previous post there are certain elements like strength and conditioning that should have a plan regardless of what manager there is. I agree that it is unlikely to happen but a ticket of Donaghy as manager and attacking coach and Donie Buckley or Paddy Tally as defence and tackling coach would be very attractive. All very experienced operators who would make a big difference. Maybe I am dreaming too much, but surely Roscommon playing in division 1 and after good underage performances (under 20's & minor) recently should make managing Roscommon a relatively attractive proposition for someone with ambition. Stick in your application Kieran. Go for it! letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 787 - 18/07/2025 12:34:41 2626382 Link 0 |
That would be a great ticket! Looks like Derry are moving very quickly to replace Tally who only stepped away last week or the week before. Examiner reporting Meenagh and McKeigue management team.

Hard to know how Donaghy would work with Roscommon or any other team as he hasn't managed any team. Will be that keen to make the step up? A lot stick to the coaching ticket as are just as well looked after and doesn't get much if any criticism when things turn south.

Lads, no chance Donaghy will be on the line for us next year! Oddball (Roscommon) - Posts: 970 - 19/07/2025 12:57:58 2626525 Link 0 |
OK so. We'd better look elsewhere. The media and the rumour mongers will have great fun matching stepped down/relieved of duties managers with vacant positions. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2558 - 19/07/2025 15:13:02 2626542 Link 0 |
Let's go with a Roscommon man managing Roscommon and see where it takes us. I'd like to see Nigel Dinneen get it. Incredible record as Roscommon U21 Manager. We had only won a single U21 Connacht title between 1982 and 2010 ( 1999) and he won Connacht titles in 2012 and 2014 reaching the All Ireland final both times losing to Dublin teams with many of the players who would go on to be the 6 in a row greatest senior football team ever. We were unlucky in 2013 losing the Connacht Final in extra time to eventual All Ireland champions Galway.

Last Roscommon man to manage (on his own) us was Des Newton......

I wonder if the CB would be brave enough to talk to Frankie? He won a championship with Abbeylara, who were tipped by a few last year to be more in the relegation mix than challenging for the title. McGeeney had him in with him in Wicklow and seemed to get on well down there. Oddball (Roscommon) - Posts: 970 - 19/07/2025 21:44:04 2626571 Link 0 |
Was it not michael ryan who did 1 match I think against donegal when des stepped down

Not a success that.

Frankie would be a interesting option, others that should deserve a mention would be Dineen , McNeill, Dowd. The key to the appointment of our next manger would be who they'll have in their coaching team. It would be great to tap into the wealth of experience that the like of Niall Daly, Seanie Mc and Cathal Cregg could bring to the younger players. If Roscommon are to reach the levels of Tyrone in developing underage talent then we need to develop better coaches throughout the county. Far too many club managers/ coaches lack the knowhow/training to embrace the modern game. It's crucial that the CB get the new setup in as early as possible,

Cathal Cregg works for Connacht gaa. Doubt he could take a coaching job with Roscommon. Looking forward to next week, Kerry are Kerry but the success of Donegal shows the importance of a professional Manager/ Coaching set up. Over now to the County Board.

Any in-county management would need a really top class coach in there. Something we lack within the county. The only All Ireland club winning manager in the county is after leaving our neighbours and has managed us before. The next best experienced would be Fergie O Donnell and that is unlikely. Don Connellan also unlikely. Recent successful Brigids manager was a Kerry man but don't hear any talk of him being a runner and don't think there is too many shouting for Pat Flanagan. Successful u21/u20 managers Nigel and Liam Tully. Nigel could be options but would still need a strong coaching ticket. Frankie still has a way to go for management credentials but again wouldn't be opposed in theory if he had a good coaching set up as well. I think Niall Daly, Cathal Cregg and some of those lads definitely have potential for the future. Would be great to see one of them involved in some capacity. Rumours, from unreliable sources!!!, that CB preference is for a local man. Who'd have the expertise and time to devote to such a demanding position? Retired persons, teachers, big business owners... Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2558 - 20/07/2025 11:14:30 2626606 Link 0 |
Absolutely shows you what a serious management team can do. I remember that last league game we played them in the Hyde 3 years ago. Now their confidence was gone at that point but they looked dire. Donegal have some fine natural talent like Gallen, McCole and Murphy and blessed with big men around the middle but they have a lot of players who would look ordinary under a different manager. If you are in serious shape and match that with work rate you are a long way there. McGuinness has them playing in way to maximise their potential and hard work is at the root of it.
