Looking at it from afar slightly the last year or two I can never get my head around that. If Meath was a strong hurling county you could understand it somewhat having so many intermediate players involved, but as mentioned the Intermediate standard is not great. Yes you might find 2 or 3 lads there but the Meath squad currently should be backboned by players from Trim, Ratoath, Kldalkey, Kiltale and Kilmessan, the other Senior teams are way off the standard of those 5 never mind Intermediate!!! Don't forget in 2023 Kildalkey's 2nd team won the Intermediate!! And even if you look beyond that Navan have played in the last two finals, won 1 of them and they didn't have anyone on the 26 yesterday. Injuries and various reasons mean they don't have all of the top lads available that they could have, so it's far from easy, but the balance of that panel seems to be all wrong and has been for the last couple of years. I think its 15 of the 26 named yesterday are from those top 5 clubs, that's 11 who aren't. Thats a large enough number considering the gulf in Standard between the top 5 and everyone else, be it Senior or Intermediate

Yeah all very strange and it is no reflection on the players themselves, they are doing their best and all good lads I'm sure but i just don't think management are doing them or the team any favors by throwing so many of them into county hurling together. Greville's link to Kildalkey must have finished in 2017 or 18 because Pat O'Halloran was back in charge in 2019 when Kildalkey won the SHC. A lot of things change in 7 years. Presently there must be a lot of inter county material not making themselves available. London May be better than many expected but they only recently failed to win the Div 3 League.

you would think that with so many lower grade representatives, there must be higher grade players making themselves unavailable. Off the Ratoath winning champo team, there must be players good enough but not being chosen / commiting for whatever reasons. Same with Trim. Others in Clanna Gael and Na Fianna come to mind. Few from Kilmessan not in the 26 the last day either. Kiltale had some very exciting younger lads over the last few years but no sign of them. I heard there is a 'development squad' for the next 15-20 players, but they way things look from the outside, that cannot be of any standard, and (maybe harshly) just an excuse to give lads a meath t-shirt or training top. hurlingcowboy101 (Meath) - Posts: 28 - 15/04/2025 17:08:24 2602093 Link 0 |
See team announced for Tyrone game, good few changes, 2 corner backs gone, one off the 26 one on the subs, Cooke the midfielder and Potterton gone to subs bench, D Rogers gone off the 26, that means both captains are dropped, very ageing team, 10 of the 15 over 30 ? lots of poor legs in that team, what will tyrone bring, from memory (newspaper report) we struggled to shake them off in the recent league game up there, ParcT (Meath) - Posts: 23 - 18/04/2025 10:48:15 2602550 Link 0 |
Ah lads where are we going with hurling in this county? I just cant understand the selection again. Is the problem the lack of commitment by players from the stronger clubs that's the problem? i think so but even so we have better players on the bench than what's on the team. We are going backwards. Also our u20's had a disastrous year again, we should be picking players from this team for the 1st team but they are nowhere close at the minute. Do we need to go back to importing lads from outside of the county? Also it doesn't look good on the management team that the 2 guys picked as captains are now dropped. Here are some players in the county that are better than some of what's there and i guess that some of these wont or cant commit but any way: S McGann C Smith D Conneely S Whitty B McKeon B Kelly B McGowan G McGowen C Quigley S Doyle M O'Sullivan A Gannon D Raleigh S Martin N McNally P Conneely E Divine A Kelly E O'Donnacha M Molloy C Keys P Dillon M Usher R Byrne I Birmingham D Reilly These are just some names off the top of my head and i am sure there is way more and as i said maybe they wont commit but if we even got some of them it would be an improvement. I fear that not only will we not be winning a Christy Ring for a while we may end up at a lower grade in the coming years. Tobefair80 (Meath) - Posts: 84 - 18/04/2025 13:04:55 2602583 Link 0 |

Derry's win in London shows how far off the pace this team is at present. London got only ONE goal today whereas we conceded TWO to Tyrone yesterday. Joke defending will win nothing. MillerX (Meath) - Posts: 1101 - 20/04/2025 14:47:37 2603057 Link 0 |
Which team are you referring to , the team that lost to London or the team that beat Tyrone. Hurling supporters not willing to support the young upcoming players over trying to winning another Christy ring when we are not ready for JMD. The players that won 3 Christy rings are at the end and the young players need to get games under their belts. The league was a success as the achievement of being competitive and holding their status to rebuild. Boynerover (Meath) - Posts: 12 - 20/04/2025 18:39:27 2603136 Link 0 |
