Meath Minor Football 2022

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Our minors start their championship this Saturday away to Longford at 12. It's a weird structure with a group of 4 and 3 coming out of it. Think it's only Conor McWeeney carried over from last year so a team of guys we'd probably be unfamiliar with. Anybody have any insight into how this team has been going, any players to look out for?

Hopefully just a set back. Win the next matches and we still in good shape

Offaly this weekend in Navan. Hopefully the team can bounce back from the Longford loss and hopefully there are some talented players on show

I dunno if i saw or heard that Conor McWeeney was only 14/15 playing the minor final last year, is that true, crikey i'd hope the lad isn't burnt out by 18/19 and gets to enjoy just playing football.

He might have been 15 but he would have definitely turned 16 before the end of 2021. It was similar to what Liam Kelly, Sean Emmanuel, Jack Kinlough, Mossie Corbett, Eoghan Frayne, Ciaran Caulfield etc. have done in the past few years and happens in all other counties also. Agreed with you let's hope that enjoyment remains and I've no doubt that him along with a few other talented young guys who've come through the past few years will make an impact on the Kilbride adult team and it would be great to see it

Great point you make there about Kilbride, they're bringing through a lot of talented young footballers who are on underage football teams, and would be really good to see them coming up through the ranks. Back boned by the Quinn's in the 60's they were a force to be reckoned with along with Kells. They shared many a great championship battle during the latter half of the decade.

Think €15 is a bit steep for the game Saturday, I know the u20 hurlers are playing after but I can't imagine there will be a big crowd at that price.

Think it could be a tight game but think we might have enough. Kildare will be strong. Does the 3rd placed team get to a pre lim q final?

I also thought 15 euro was very expensive. And yeah the 3rd team does make the preliminary so win this weekend and we should get to the knockouts

Are Meath minors out now?

Looks to have been a very unlucky loss.

Seems to be very unfortunate.

They have another group game against Kildare but we're gone already as Offaly and Longford have the head to head on us. I don't want to be too harsh but it wasn't really an unlucky loss. If Offaly had their shooting boots on at all the game probably wouldn't have been close, our penalty was a very soft call and our goal was put on a plate for us by a bad Offaly back pass. The players are only 17 so hopefully they can improve as they enter under 20 and adult football and there still were a few players that looked like they have potential. But if you lose to Longford and Offaly (who Kildare beat easily) and can't get out of a group of 4 that 3 get out of then I don't we can have any complaints

We cannot deserve to go any further with losses to Longford and Offaly. Kildare are much stronger than both by all accounts. Big disappointed for the county and all concerned given the standard that had been set the last two years.

On the balance of play offaly probly created the better chances but for the ref to let the square ball and final goal scored for offaly stand is hard to comprehend. With a win yesterday they could have had a few more weeks to have a rattle at leinster. Referees shouldn't make mistakes with the basic technical fouls.

To be frank this bodes very badly on management, to not be able to find and develop a system with 15/20 players to beat both Longford and Offaly is a sad state of affairs with the pick of players Meath have at their disposal.

At end of the day lads, if we only get one top class player at senior level from a single minor team, then that's a successful minor team no matter what the team itself did or didn't win.

It's about player development. Winning at senior is what counts. The Dubs know this and plan accordingly.

100%. How many age groups have we been good at minor and poor at 21's/20's and into senior. If this could be the reverse I'm sure we'd all be delighted. Let's hope they can use this as fuel and retain the hunger to keep improving and that it doesn't alienate them

Well said Crinigan, you can win all irelands at underage and get no senior player of note from the team, or lose in the first round and then get a whole batch of lads. Look at the 90's our minor winning team of 90 and 92 were the backbone of the 96 and 99 all irelands. Laois won 2 minors in a row and contested a third final and won 1 Leinster Title. You never know and it's all about developing those guys. As you say Dublin are now concentrating on developing players and wining at U20, but its also noticeable that's dried up in recent years too and whilst they've won some U20's their last minor team of note was the 2012 team of Scully, Costello, Shane Carthy, Davey Byrne, Conor McHugh and Eric Lowndes. They won 3 U20's in a 6 year spell but haven't won it since 2017 and Meath and Kildare have been much better at minor and U20 level since.

Key thing, never rely on underage success for senior victory. It doesn't work like that.

the question in my mind is the see-saw nature of this. We win the All Ireland minor last year, and we are eliminated in the first ...with a number of players from last year available .
Even allowing for the unpredictability of underage players ..one would have to accept that this is well below our aspirations for Our underage development work of the last 7 years. Equally, i assume we are smart enough to realise that regular all ireland minors is not realistic either.....but getting to Leinster finals and out of group stages must be were we set our targets surely?
Now on player development...which is a total different point...im blue in the face talking about that, so no preaching needed to me at least on that one , and happy to debate that one to an inch of its life

are you saying Brain...that there is no connection between underage success & subsequent senior success? ..just to be clear?
