Armagh's Barry McCambridge is tackled by Dublin's Cormac Costello

Armagh are through to the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland senior football championship with a round left to play after defeating Dublin by 0-24 to 0-19 at Croke Park.

Kieran McGeeney’s side were impressive as they condemned the capital men to their first loss of the group stages in the Sam Maguire Cup race, guaranteeing themselves top spot in Group 4 in the process having saw off Derry in their opener two weeks ago.

The Dubs, who had 17 wides over the 70 minutes, had opened up an early 0-6 to 0-3 lead at headquarters with the help of Cormac Costello, but the All-Ireland champions closed the gap within seven minutes and moved ahead in the 20th minute, after which a Rian O’Neill two-pointer helped them to move towards a 0-13 to 0-9 half-time lead.

O’Neill would sail over another from beyond the arc in the opening minute of the restart and Rory Grugan would add three frees for the Orchard men to tighten their grip on the game.

Costello and Sean Bugler each landed two-pointers to keep Dessie Farrell’s charges in the hunt, but the holders never looked like losing their lead as substitute Stefan Campbell saw a point backed up by O’Neill’s third two-pointer of the day and Joe McElroy would come off the bench to add to the winning tally.

Next up for Armagh is a date with Galway in their last round game, with the Dubs set to take on Derry the same weekend of June 14/15th.
