Even allowing for the fact that cavan played extremely poorly with a purely individualistic mindset that is probably the best u21 team performance I have seen in years. For people who could not attend the game tonight Donegal gave an absolute exhibition of team work from full length hand passing moves ending in scores, speed of transition from defence to attack & mixture of kick passing & hand passing. Also individually they had unbelievable pace carrying ball, unerring accuracy. Think it's fair to say they would have defeated a lot of senior teams based on their performance tonight

Disappointed with tonight. Cavan were completely outclassed by a quicker and fitter team. Hard to judge overall based on tonight, well have to see how far Donegal to judge. patman92 (Cavan) - Posts: 71 - 05/04/2017 23:32:42 1976281 Link 0 |

Very complimentary words indeed. I did think it was based more on hand passing and attacking at pace rather than too much reliance on the foot passing. A Donegal minor side gave a similar display away in Armagh in 2015 yet ended up having an early ending to their summer by being shocked by Derry so there will be no counting chickens. To be fair Galway, Dublin and especially Kerry have shown really good form in what is shaping up to be a vintage final U-21 championship. Kerry last week were exceptional their variation of play at times was a GAA version of total football for me especially their foot passing into oncoming forwards.

At the age Donegal played in the All Ireland Minor Football final three years ago losing out to Kerry. The odds suggested that they were hot favourites and so it proved. I read in last weeks Celt that a lot of the Cavan players had not won a game at minor or under 21 level going into this year's championship, therefore, the result can be no surprise. kildare blue (Cavan) - Posts: 578 - 06/04/2017 06:32:38 1976309 Link 0 |
Fair play to Declan Bonner and Donegal. Last night was an exhibition of football. The scores that was kicked were sublime. Breaking tackles at speed, support play, kick passing, just such a pity it was against Cavan. Everything Donegal did, we didn't or were incapable of. There were holes all over the field but we never made any switches in the first half even though we were hemorrhaging scores, baffling by Lynch as he stood on his own on the sideline and did nothing. Game was over after a couple of minutes. Best of luck to Donegal, They have to be second favourites after Kerry. cavan97 (Cavan) - Posts: 369 - 06/04/2017 08:21:20 1976321 Link 0 |

They do play defensive but at a far different level and how many times over the last 15 or so years have I mentioned the ebb and flow. They are a joy to watch and when in possession of the ball it's direct attacking with support at either flank. The only thing that will beat this team is complacency nothing else. What really does it matter? We won 4 under 21 titles and have these players progressed? No they haven't. Seance Johnston was our top scorer last year and he hasn't played u21 for 12 years. The u21s coming through are not progressing at the rate they should be considering the success we had at that level. We don't have the expertise within the county to bring players to the next level. 4 under 21 titles, a minor title and a colleges title and not 1 decent forward to show for it. Cavan over protective of u21 players. Kerry, Galway, Donegal had u21s involved with the Seniors in the league. Cavan beat an extremely poor Fermanagh team while Donegal had 2 games against Tyrone as well as a number of players playing Senior. Didn't see the game so can't comment on the performance, but that is a shockingly poor result for us. You'd wonder why we have regressed so much at underage in recent times, especially after dominating the province at this level for 4 years. By all accounts Donegal sound like an awesome team. Good post. There is no shame in losing to a better team & it happens to everyone at some stage in their lives.

I agree. It is bizarre that people who i assume are grown men savage an underage team after admitting that they didnt even attend the game. I sat near a fan last night who rediculed the efforts of our team for the entire hour. There is something very wrong in our counties football. It is not however to be found in the current u21 setup. It is in the disgraceful attitude of many on here. Lads, the team last night were beaten by an extraordinary Donegal squad. However, Conor Bradley, Caoimhin Reilly, Donal Monaghan, Luke Fortune, David Brady, and some might say others too, are well capable of making an impact at senior level. However, even if they dont, that doesnt lessen their effort or commitment.

I watched the Connacht u21 final on Saturday. Galway had 2 or 3 excellent forwards. Seems to come natural to them.Michael Day and Finnerty were a joy to watch. Though they weren't playing against a defensive set up. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2832 - 06/04/2017 11:31:15 1976421 Link 0 |
The advantage the young Tyrone & Donegal players have is that they are coming into a well eatablished senior setup that has success in it's recent history. For me the man who has laid the groundwork for this U21 team is Jim McGuinness, for Tyrone it is Mickey Harte. These managers put a stamp on their counties that has permeated every level & Cavan's task is to appoint a figure who can do the same thing. lads, it was men and boys last night. We learned nothing from hammering Fermanagh and were blown away by a sharp, well prepared Donegal team. FrDougalMaguire (Cavan) - Posts: 152 - 06/04/2017 11:57:02 1976435 Link 0 |
Donegal looked good but Kerry are the team in this grade. Am told they would beat at least 26 of the 32 senior county teams. A huge team!
