National League

There's no doubt that the Championship is the premier competition and what we should be aiming for.
However the League offers us the platform to improve because we are playing against the best teams in the country.
These games can only bring the team on and if we learn to compete with the better teams then the Championship fixtures will not seem as daunting.
So, for me, theses league games are extremely important for the team and will be a huge help to the team going forward.

He's not the worst.

It's hard to think of a ref who hasn't been hard on us in recent years. Deegan has been one of the best for a number of years.

I have some recollection of a Cavan win in the 1970's in Breffni Park against Kerry but it may have been a challenge match or the opening of a new pitch. A good few of the winning All Ireland Junior Team would have tasted success against Kerry a couple of years ago played last week end.
Anybody know Jimmy Magee's telephone number!!!"
Opening of terry Doyle park maybe?? Anyone??

You have got to be joking. League starts and ends first this is why no one should even be thinking of Ulster. Please don't mention the McKenna cup. Once Cavan have secured their position in division one we can then start to entertain Ulster but no point in getting to an Ulster final if you leave it behind you so by getting good competitive football right now will stand to all the players and the county going forward."
We didn't actually hold the ball for last 3 mins. We kicked it in for a 50/50 ball where mayo won it and had a perfect opportunity to counter attack as everybody was out of position.. Nearly gave me a heart attack.

Still banging that drum. Thank god for Terry Hyland, the best thing to happen to Cavan football in the last 10 yrs. brought pride back to the county!

Oh man, this is painful. How about staying in division 1 and having a good crack at the championship every year.

I agree with you blueman1903 from what I have seen of him he has done Cavan no favors at all so let's hope he is fairer this coming Sunday. I don't know what's Kerry's opinions are of him it would be interesting to hear to see if they balance each other out.

We held it more or less. Went for a shot at end which was turned over but full time whistle went.

Moving off how many minutes and seconds we held the ball for in the last few minutes against Mayo, I am thinking about the starting team for Sunday assuming everyone from last week is fit and naturally we already know that Faulkner is out.

I would be inclined to keep things as they were. Certainly the back line does not need any attention. The only question for me would be should we persist with Johnston in the forward line or should we instead give perhaps Joe Dillon a start and let Madden drift out - which he did to good effect last Sunday. I don't think that Mattie will make any wholesale changes and we need to have consistency in selection - by that I mean that Gearoid, Clarke, Dunne, McVeety, etc staying in the middle. I really enjoyed the experience in Castlebar last weekend and I really don't think we are out of place in division one. We can hold our own here and hope that we can give Kerry a right good battle on Sunday. The psychology of these lads needs to be that they can win. Last Sunday they won in Castlebar, Monaghan went down to Kerry and beat them, so why can't we on our home turf!

Best of luck to the lads. I'll be there with bells on!

Moving on......................so whats the general outlook for this weekends game? one thing can be certain if Cavan turn over Kerry that'll be a major boost to survival, but it is a major challenge. this could be a defining game for this squad

I can't see how you can justify dropping any of the starting 15 for this weekend.

Johnson is still capable of kicking a score, and our poor shooting in the first half almost had us buried against Mayo.

The ball doesn't tend to stick with Madden as a target man, so if we're playing direct ball in, we need to move him out the field. I thought mcvitty drifted inside very well a couple of times, including for the goal.

1 major improvement I hope to see is some a strategy for the kickout- the backs have to move to create space!

Well I suggested one change and that was Johnston. He didnt do much wrong but found himself dropping deep to get on the ball. I think Dillon looked bright and McKiernan said in his post match interview that he is flying in training. Otherwise I am happy with the team. Agree that kick outs need to be secured and look, if we are there or thereabouts with 15 minutes to go then all bets are off!
