Brilliant win today from the lads showed great courage beating Mayo in their own backyard. The team shape was very good and I was delighted with the way we penetrated the Mayo defense at times. Massive performances from McVitty, GMac and also Killian Clarke who has been giving a lot of stick on this thread. To hold Cillian O Connor scoreless is no easy task. Fair play to Mattie and the lads but lets kick on now and get two more big performances to stay up. Silverblue (Cavan) - Posts: 10 - 19/03/2017 23:37:39 1968871 Link 0 |
Well done to all the lads yesterday some great performances.mcveetys kicking was great he kicked a few good ones v Donegal as well he didn't carry ball into tackles as much which was good. I taught management had a good game not as rash.

I totally agree with you on your point regarding the style of play. they played more or less the same as under Hyland and it worked very well. they looked comfortable and composed in the second half, I was also happy the way they closed t he game out in the last 3 minutes. it looked like they were the experienced team in that moment. I have been critical of Cavan so far this year but nothing makes me happier than to see the lads put in a performance like that to remind me and a lot of others that there is footballers and hope. looking forward to next weekend and another championship game. it won't be easy but i wouldn't like to have Mayos run in either. hopefully our friends here in Ulster can do us a massive favour. On another note, last year Cavans season turned around at half time against meath, hopefully history is about to repeat itself theweanling (Cavan) - Posts: 414 - 20/03/2017 09:27:23 1968926 Link 0 |

I agree win many posters a fantastic win and a huge boost to the confidence within the camp. we delivered a performance in the second half. I watched it again last night and we were a bit clueless in the first half an in all honesty were really lucky to be in the game. we gave them far to much respect and space in that opening 35. I only watched yesterday and listened last week (so I aint no judge and jury) but it feels like we just meed to somehow come up with a more consistent performance over seventy minutes to actually show our through colours. a Cavan team in div 1 will always be punching above their weight but if they can produce the determination they showed in the second half then they might just earn the right. Shades of navan last year in terms that I just didn't see that second half coming. toolbox (None) - Posts: 68 - 20/03/2017 09:57:57 1968940 Link 0 |

Well done to all concerned yesterday. I missed the game through work but saw the highlights last night. Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 20/03/2017 11:04:36 1968987 Link 0 |
Absolutely it's the way we need to play. The speed of the transition from back to front is what sets the top teams from the rest. Mackey was immense in that link role in 2013 and we looked like we were going places. Injuries hampered him and we never pushed on. But yesterday, Gerry Smith was excellent in that role as was Martin Reilly. Rory Dunne chipped in and so did Madden when he came a bit deeper. The real test will be whether or not we can still do it against a team who filter numbers back, which I expect Kerry to do and which we'll face throughout the ulster championship. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 20/03/2017 12:22:19 1969031 Link 0 |
Congratulations to the team and management yesterday on a terrific performance. Well worth the spin to Castlebar to witness that. It's been a steep learning curve this campaign and we've looked for a lot of the time naive and unsure of ourselves, but yesterday the team played with a maturity and self belief that Mattie alluded to after the Tyrone defeat. This was not a smash and grab either, we stayed with them throughout the game and they were the first to blink. Hopefully this win brings us on a bit and Division 1 gives us a confidence to take a big scalp in Championship. If you can't beat them in the League, you won't in the Championship. "Might not be happy reading for some posters here but I think we went back to terry Hyland's style of play & the lads seemed a lot more comfortable.".. Well Bond you are 100 percent correct and i LMFAO and all of a sudden we are now playing better football in most peoples eyes..even though we are fundamentally playing the same system...my god how people get tarnished with brushes. Anyhow savage result and we still need to get our shooting boots on. What Mattie has done is added to the players as part of the transition from defence to attack. Under Terry it was mainly the job of M Reilly and Mc Vetty who carried ball through midfield, now he has added young Smith and a few other when the need arises which gives us more options. They are also inclined to let it go a bit quicker than carrying it. As for the centre half back position, as much as i would like a traditional setup where the centre half back mows anything that comes down the middle it has become way more dynamic. Clarke, Moynagh & even K Brady filled it at times yesterday. .. so its looks like whoever is nearest In the second, K O'Connor free taking probably showed where Mayo are at and done us a favour. The one he kicked from under the stand into the wind was only a 20% chance tops.. ponger (Cavan) - Posts: 544 - 20/03/2017 12:59:26 1969059 Link 0 |
A great 5 days for Cavan football, with the under 21s win in Brewster last wed night and not forgetting the under 17s and Minors good wins in Armagh on sat in the Ulster League. Well done to all the players and management. Virginiablue75 (Cavan) - Posts: 27 - 20/03/2017 13:57:36 1969090 Link 1 |
Some win for the U17s alright. That is some score to put up. Maybe Armagh are poor but those teams have consistently beat Dublin at U16 for the last number of years playing brilliant football so there has to be some real quality there.

cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts:2391 - 20/03/2017 12:22:19 1 I would forget about Ulster right now as I stated way back when this topic started staying in Division should be the only thing on anyones minds once the league is over we then concentrate on the next hurdle which is Ulster ect. The win yesterday was brilliant and Mayo have a far harder job than Cavan to stay in the division as it stands. They have Tyrone and Donegal and we have Kerry and Roscommon if we can take three points from these two matches I would say we are safe and even two points might be enough. Fingers crossed we stay up it will be like climbing mount everest and Cavan will benefit by playing in the top tier while building a stronger team. There is the possibility of being relegated on Sunday if we lose to Kerry and Mayo win also. Also, one more point could potentially keep us up if Mayo lose their last 2. Cant wait for next Sunday but it will take a monumental effort to beat this Kerry team. But im enjoying this journey immensely and hope that we can do it!
