Any word on a back room team yet?, and how is Joe McCarthy doing? blueman1903 (Cavan) - Posts:270 - 14/10/2016 13:09:29 1926218 Holding his own thank god long may it continue. I asked a very close friend of his last week at the Intermediate match and he said he was doing good. Great football man not many of his caliber about these day's. Surely Tomsmith and SeanRinn could do the job as a duo.... tomsmith (Cavan) - Posts: 3982 - 18/10/2016 19:41:07 1927386 Link 0 |
Such a shame Tom - its what the people really want. Any truth about Peter Reilly getting a selector role under McGleenan? I'm pretty sure that Matty will be looking for some inside knowledge of the game in Cavan and Peter would be a possibility. Any other names in the mix? McCabe is a maybe. Ciaran Brady could be another who has managed club and may fancy it? McGleenan would have come up against a few of them in the '95 Ulster final and may look to some of that panel! I would like to see peter reilly and ciaran Brady involved, they have management experience and know Cavan football well.

If the new man is wise he will bring a trainer and at least one selector from outside, so we should have a max of one insider. Best to stay clear of anyone close to the previous management. Fresh ideas and energy needed all the way, the players are there. shannon414 (Cavan) - Posts: 228 - 19/10/2016 18:28:40 1927673 Link 0 |
All involved with previous management are gone to other counties. Gary Rodgers big loss. Gone to Monaghan. Kevin Downes Westmeath. Damien Donohoe should be considered seeing as experience as manager and has seen a lot of football last couple years.

How did we let Rodgers go? Big loss indeed. Gilligan's kickouts aren't a worry, but his goalkeeping needs work. Rodgers would've been ideal if kept on. Who else is available? Would Gary Connaughton be the man? Or Paul O'Dowd?

From a good source, Gary Rogers is staying with Cavan

Great to hear Mattie talk about playing attacking football and tackling high up the pitch.. so refreshing. For the last 4 years we been stifled by backways and sideways football. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 02/11/2016 11:03:56 1930849 Link 0 |
Attacking football indeed, kinda like the football that had us highest scorers in the league, this is not a new departure lads, we've been at it a while now. Not slagging the new man, he has my full support but credit TH where its due ramor101 (Cavan) - Posts: 289 - 02/11/2016 12:20:30 1930872 Link 0 |
Attacking football is great to watch we all know it. But do people have small memory's. Kildare 2012, Longford 2011 Cork 2010. When we had no defensive plan we were destroyed in some of our worst defeats. When we were organised we became competitive. Dont abandon this for the sake of it. blueskies (Cavan) - Posts: 197 - 02/11/2016 14:02:47 1930910 Link 0 |
We played some lovely attacking football in a few league games we won.. BUT we crept back into our defensive shell in the championship playing lateral backways football. One player in particular I can't recall him playing a foward pass.. all backways or across the park stuff. Mattie seems to want to change that.., Wow! all sounds good on paper but attacking football would play into the hands off the likes off donegal, tyrone, mayo, kerry, dublin..we'd be destroyed. Roscommon lost a connaught final by giving the people what they wanted and reverting to attacking football wishfulthinkin (Cavan) - Posts: 1720 - 02/11/2016 14:36:10 1930920 Link 0 |
You can play attacking football and still have a good defensive shape. They are not exclusive of each other.

Dublin play attacking football and they have not done so bad over the past couple of years. This guy is going have us playing positive football and that is a welcome development. kildare blue (Cavan) - Posts: 578 - 02/11/2016 17:05:03 1930972 Link 0 |
So refreshing to hear an county manager who believes in attacking play,be some spectacle to see. neutral (None) - Posts: 358 - 02/11/2016 17:10:39 1930973 Link 1 |
Dublins style of football changed when Donegal ambushed them in 2014. They play a sweeper. They had the attacking talent to play man to man. Cavan have good players.but but not the calibre of forwards of Dublin. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2832 - 03/11/2016 08:33:58 1931074 Link 0 |
Who's the Dublin sweeper Foolsgold??

Name the last team to win Ulster that didn't base their game on solidity at the back above all else? Inactive x5 (Cavan) - Posts: 1452 - 03/11/2016 12:17:49 1931179 Link 0 |
With Dublin when the game is evenly balanced you get Connolly , Flynn and Kilkenny coming from deep. O Sullivan and the full back line rarely push up. Their 3 inside forwards rarely come out past 35m . They don't play a sweeper like other teams..,coming from deep at speed is not a sweeper.
