Don't see a thread for the underage teams for this season, so starting this for chat for the lads for the year ahead. Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2450 - 18/02/2023 11:11:48 2458795 Link 0 |
U20s in league action recently. Disappointing loss to Longford last week when we seemed to be ahead and better for much of it, but got caught for a few goals and Longford saw it off at the end. Seems to be trying a few things though with a big panel. Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2450 - 18/02/2023 11:20:38 2458799 Link 0 |
Are there a lot of players from last years run to the Ulster final still to return.

Think there's some alright. They said in the Celt during the week that they're trying the panel of 40 to see what's there. Did see McKeogh in the photo for Longford with his top on, he was starting last year and when into the Senior panel (with Carolan and those), so he must have a knock. It's just League, think we'll see the true team come out of it towards the end when getting ready for Championship

U20s out tonight v Monaghan. Always a big game against our dear neighbours. Monaghan were meant to be out last Wednesday, but with the weather the pitch was unplayable, meaning they played Saturday v Armagh. So they're out again after a 4 day turnaround. Monaghan at home, hope we get a good crowd out. For those unable to travel, Ulster GAA TV will be streaming the match. Best of luck tonight fellas Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2450 - 29/03/2023 08:44:43 2467482 Link 0 |
Unclear from your post but just to clarify, the game is in Breffni

Fair point, I wasn't clear. Hope we get a good crowd out

What is it about Cavan football, just listened to second half of under 20 v Monaghan seems we have a problem at under age and seniors of taking wrong options when in attack going for stupid scores or dropping ball short or into goal keepers hands , Monaghan didn't do that tonight they were accurate when they got their chances why is that. What's these coaches teaching these players that 9 out of 10 times we take wrong options and that includes the seniors, we left that game behind us tonight by making the wrong choices, good luck to Monaghan but unless we buck our ideas up we'll always be the nearly men. Very dissapointing stuff last night, If that's our strongest panel in 10 years then things aren't looking great. asdfg (Cavan) - Posts: 320 - 30/03/2023 08:08:03 2467703 Link 0 |
We have seen this film many times before… nothing to do with luck..

You keep listening to the radio, maybe if you had to go to the match your shout might of got it over the bar instead of dropping short

huge opportunity missed last night. i thought the team battled extremely hard against a strong Monaghon team that had a game under their belt already. we should have been alot further in front at half time and wasted 7/8 scoring chances with balls falling short or crazy pot shots in the last 15-20 minutes. also have to say that i thought the substitutions and volume of them in the last 15 mins was ridiculous. they weakened our team & totally disrupted our structure allowing Monaghon to dominate the middle third of the field. seemed to be pre-arranged substitutions rather than actually reading the game on its own merits

Why was Conor Casey not involved with the U20s this year FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2832 - 30/03/2023 12:58:22 2467784 Link 0 |
So a good shout can make a player kick the ball further and more accurately.. that's amazing and would make you wonder why Mayo keep coming up short despite their massive support… And Cavans last Ulster success ( 2020 ) came when there was nobody at all at the game… Makes your comment look very silly….

Although I perhaps wouldn't be as critical on the kickouts, I do think we left it behind us. For example, the zonal press on their kickout was at times too easy to break out of, especially when we were chasing the game. Then, aggressive man on man was needed. Nevertheless, I must say that they're a well coached team who obviously buy into what their management want them to do. On another day, Lovett's shot slips inside the post and we go to extra time. I wouldn't be overly harsh with my criticism. They're only 19 20 years old. On another note, Ulster badly needs the round robin that other provinces employ.

Agreed , what I was getting at it happens all too often for it to be put down to luck etc. You have to start questioning the footballing IQ of our teams. We need to smarten up, look how cute Tyrone teams are generally. They can fix things in game and figure things out for themselves. asdfg (Cavan) - Posts: 320 - 30/03/2023 13:43:17 2467799 Link 0 |
Only Leinster employs the round robin at U20 level. But should be the same format in 4 provinces ,be it knockout or round robin

Tyrone are a very good example of Teams that can grind out a result even when not playing well from their cuteness . I never remember a Cavan Team being able to do that. Back in the day on the club front Kingscourt could do it and Cavan Gaels could also do it. But from a county point of view especially this past 25 years when the chips are down we are found wanting. I'm not being critical of the kickouts or any of the players as i stated they put in a massive effort from no: 1 - 15. my criticism is off the substitutions and sheer number of subs introduced in a short period of time that severely weakened the team and disrupted the teams structure and flow handing the initiative to Monaghon

If the round robin was in place and we got beaten by a team say in the Final that we already beat we would be complaining that it wasn't a knockout… The same excuses every year as to why we were beaten… bad luck or bad refereeing seems to be the problem…. How about accepting that we are actually not good enough…?
