it will be interesting to see if Down play the same manure they played in the league probably one of the worst teams to watch in ireland if they do we are in for a real treat. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 479 - 12/06/2023 09:40:39 2485703 Link 0 |
Get a grip of yourself…. you think everyone who disagrees with your opinion is the one person… how pathetic is that…? You are certainly not that knowledgeable

Manure is not the word for it. They were woeful against Longford at home last Saturday. Even missed a peno when they were 3 points behind. Cannot see what advantage it is for us to be playing the quality of teams we are playing. They're no way beating teams like London, Offaly, Laois is improving us for the future. As the saying goes.." you can only dance with the girls that are in the hall " … hopefully from this year on we will be playing a much higher quality of opponent… The brilliant current management set up is the reason we have wasted 3 years playing these teams so we have to put up with it.,,,

Down are a really strong team. Did they beat Donegal in Ulster this year ?. It will be tight. There was not much in it in the league game up till the last few minutes when they had to go for it. They can open you up with quick passing movements and get through on goal pretty quickly. If they take the points when they are on offer instead of trying to score the perfect goal they could beat us. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5520 - 12/06/2023 14:36:45 2485870 Link 0 |
Are we good enough to beat the likes of Meath, Antrim , Limerick when it matters? Yes we would probably beat all 3 with **** all at stake but I'm not so sure we have the mental strength to beat them when it matters most. We probably could beat the likes of Westmeath last year 9 times out of 10 but couldn't when it mattered most. Mark my words we will not win this Tailteann Cup playing the type of football we have being playing. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 12/06/2023 16:37:59 2485955 Link 0 |
I think they are not that good but the way they are set up makes them very hard to play against… If as you say they create a lot of goal chances then we could be in trouble because even the weakest of Division 4 teams were getting multiple goal chances against us…. Hopefully our back line will have tightened up a bit on recent outings which I'm sure they will… Our record against Down is very good and with home advantage I would be confident that we can win provided we don't play into their hands by slowing the game down with lateral and backwards hand passing… If we move the ball quickly and not carry into traffic it will give our forwards a good chance of getting scores… anything else plays into their hands…. I hope this management team release the hand brake and demand everything is done at pace but I wouldn't be holding my breath on that one…!!!

Down could easily win this game if they had any bottle and come to breffni to play attacking football with all the great underage players they have and would easily score 3 to 4 goals against our porus defense but under their present management they will spend most of the game with 15 players inside their own 45 and hopefully they will get what they deserve in what will be a puke of a game. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 479 - 12/06/2023 18:48:15 2486024 Link 0 |
Think this is a potential banana skin for us. Down have a tradition of improving as they advance through a championship. To me, they looked very good in their second half last week. I expect them to push on and bring a higher level of intensity to Breffni. On the other hand we don't seem to do well with home advantage, would rather have them in Clones. Maybe it's the extra pressure of home expectations. In any case, if we produce another Armagh type performance and attitude, we'll be in trouble. A good test for Mickeys management skills to ensure that we inflict our own intensity and front up to their physicality. ondforty (Cavan) - Posts: 461 - 14/06/2023 06:44:23 2486349 Link 0 |
And still no team announcement, yet teams playing on Sunday have publicly announced their team BreffniPark (Cavan) - Posts: 35 - 16/06/2023 11:11:59 2486798 Link 0 |
Some do announce, but not all, it is up to them to do so. Teams have to be to Croke Park on Thursday evening, they'll be released today at 12pm to journos on a spreadsheet, so we'll get it then

Anyway, looks like the weather is turning and after a lovely few weeks, it'll be poor enough tomorrow. Sods law. Bad day weather wise v Armagh, now looks to be the same again which is annoying for Championship at this time of year. Just hope we stick at it, but greasy ball on a hard surface is always harder work Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2450 - 16/06/2023 11:17:55 2486802 Link 0 |
Team announced, one change from Offaly, Boylan in for O Neill. McVeety, Gerry and Jayo in subs so might see some changes. No Conor Smith, Marty or Conor Madden named.

Yeah just saw it too. Strong team, and great options off the bench. Great to see Gerry back, and we can get more into McVeety too

Would conditions not be the same for both teams? Or are Down bring their own dry ball with them!! If you're expecting anything other than a dour lateral backward hand passing game then you're in cloud cuckoo land. You couldn't hand pick 2 more negative Management and Teams. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 16/06/2023 12:40:45 2486842 Link 0 |
That old chestnut "conditions the same for both teams" Up there with "let it in" and "don't kick it backwards" as proof of an out-of-touch armchair supporter who thinks tactics have no part in the modern game. Wet weather makes handling conditions trickier for the team who tries to play the more expansive game. It plays into the hands of defensive teams who like to get 15 men behind the ball and turn it into a game of attrition. Down would be one of those teams. They'll definitely be happier than Cavan to see the rain arrive. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 16/06/2023 13:12:06 2486862 Link 1 |
Why do teams have to go to Croke Park by Thursday night..? Is this always the case….just wondering..?
ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3057 - 16/06/2023 13:15:06 2486866 Link 0 |
Thank you. You'd swear they didn't think of the implications. Of course conditions are the same for both, but does affect game plans differently. Can tell these lads though, lot of barstool thinking from 40 years ago there

Well we played London in Ruislip on a hot sunny day with a good wind at our backs in the 2nd half and never kicked 1 ball into the D area. We got turned over on numerous occasions with a dry ball. Conceded 2 goals, could have been 4. Why would V Down be any different. They are the most negative team in Ireland with the system they play. On our previous performances that result was coming so not really a shock. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 19/06/2023 09:23:56 2487063 Link 0 |
