Do some posters on here not think that maybe, just maybe, Mickey could see clearly what was going well and what wasn't going well on Sunday, but decided to play his cards close to his chest, knowing we had enough to beat sligo playing man to man defence?? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 22/06/2022 14:21:17 2426854 Link 2 |
Yep, I fully agree. I'd rather have stuff to work on, knowing we can get better, than Westmeath who might have a higher notion of themselves now. And it was the way we setup for a team like Sligo, leaving ourselves open by the way we pushed forward. We'll not be like that for a final against a better team. The fact we still won and scored 20 points while leaving a lot behind us tells us a story too. A lot to work on, and the lads and management will know this more than anyone. We've 3 weeks from Sunday to nail things.

Apologies, I got that wrong. I see it was the other poster with name starting with breffni who said that. Sorry, got that one mixed up...

I think our set up on Sunday was not that bad if we had pushed up on all the kick outs instead of handing them the ball…. I can never understand a coach who wants to give the opposition easy possession … it makes absolutely no sense …!

I definitely agree, Cavan should have pushed up on the kick outs Sligo went long only 7 times and they lost 5 out of 7 so definitely Cavan would have starved them of possession if we pushed up.anyway I'd say Micky knew what he was at .

Yeah not sure. They'll clearly have had a plan, based on previous game footage from Sligo games. It's not like this wouldn't be analysed. So they must have thought giving them their own ball meant we had better chance of turning them over, as they'd have a lot of work to do getting up the field from far back to. It happened to a point, but with our size we should have pushed them to go long. There would have been a method to it though, and not everything depends on the kickout alone but a number of factors that feed into around that. Think overall though we need to trust our big men though

No good giving the opposition the kick out if there's no tackles going in…. Sligo could work the ball into a scoring position without a hand been put in them… If management can't see that then they are clueless… but for the grace of God Sligo would have had 3/4 more goals and we were dumped….

Of course you don't understand it

And you do…. Nearly cost us the game.. yet Mickey looked at it for 70 minutes…clueless coaching

So it was by "the grace of God" that Sligo missed their goal chances? Nothing to do with us getting cover players into position in front of and behind Galligan? The only place luck came into it was the penalty. They were very lucky to get that because Gerry Smith knowingly committed the foul outside the square. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 23/06/2022 10:16:30 2426985 Link 0 |
I like how you conveniently forget we had 5 goal chances too. If my Aunt had balls and all that... You can't just concentrate solely on what they did, but then also ignore what we did to prevent the goals. It was last ditch stuff, but we still prevented a goal from play, by hook or by crook. They had as much poor shot selection as we did, along with good saves. Lots for us to work on though, which is no bad thing leading into a final. Wouldn't be too worried about their bad defending…I would be more worried about our own.. A good forward line would have riddled us with goals on Sunday… It gives us plenty to work on that's for sure but any decent management team wouldn't leave it to the last game of the season to get it sorted out…

You don't think it was luck when Osien Kiernan blocked the 1st goal he prevented as he had no clue that the ball was smacked straight at him or the one that came back of the crossbar… we were steeped on both occasions but you must not have seen either or doesn't suit… Defending was shocking and an unwell Faulkner left on for the entire match didn't help either but we got over the line which was the important thing…. Hopefully Mickey is more awake in the Final to things happening in front of him…!!

But you learn from your last game. We learn about how they got through our defence. And we can see what worked well for us, even if it didn't result in a score. While we didn't get a goal, we had 5 distinct chances. Not everything has to be so unduly negative. We got the win, and we can delve deep into the data and show where we need to get better. It's what all the good teams do. It's not always a bad or negative thing to have something to work on. I'm just pointing out it wasn't all one way traffic, and other day like Fermanagh we'd have got a couple of those and coasted home.

On the Oisin Kiernan one. It was great positioning, awareness and work ethic to cover behind Ray. He made his own luck. The one that came back off the bar - Ray would've saved it if it had been any lower. In truth, what you're saying (without saying it) is that it was poor finishing on Sligo's part. You're more than happy to point out that it's poor finishing at the other end! cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 23/06/2022 14:24:17 2427068 Link 0 |
I would agree it was poor finishing on Sligos part…. that's their problem… our problem is we are giving up too many goal chances… Div3/4 teams will fluff these…. the big teams won't that's my point

We won't play a team outside of Division 3 or 4 until next summer in Championship. Lots of time to get things right

You have just summed yourself up there. One proper clown to come out with a statement like that.

How so? What's factually wrong with what I said in reply to the other comment?
