Taking MG at his word that there are no injuries in the panel, how does the starting XV look? Bearing in mind the strength and weaknesses of our favourite neighbours, I would call it as MadgeKing (Cavan) - Posts: 493 - 14/05/2019 19:23:47 2184100 Link 0 |
I'd rather a forward to score instead of getting a player booked , Forward line more likely to be Oisin Kieranan Madden M Reilly C.oreilly Mc Kieranan Mc Vitty goonie (Cavan) - Posts: 308 - 14/05/2019 21:19:04 2184130 Link 0 |

He's a good reader of the game, can intercept ball into McManus and collect breaking ball that comes off him. But once that's done, he needs to be told, in no uncertain terms, to hand-pass off to a runner on his shoulder. I don't think I've ever seen him kick a ball with the inside or laces of his boot and those drilled outside-of-the-boot balls he drills into the forward line will get lapped up be a back line all day. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 15/05/2019 09:11:12 2184216 Link 0 |
I think that is very bit harsh. He is one of our best players to deliver a early long ball into the forwards along with Martin Reilly. Obviously sometimes those balls can be low percentage but they are high reward. He can kick a score from distance. He is strong as a horse in the tackle and is a very committed lad and a good leader. He has excellent hands and is an option on kick outs. He lacks pace but nothing he can do about that - you either have it or you don't, sometimes this can get him exposed on a hard fast pitch so need to be careful he doesn't get isolated. I would also say he has obviously done a lot of fitness work in the winter as he was fitter this year than I ever saw him. For me when Moynagh is going well he is on the team every time.

I found him very inconsistent the last few years, he didn't seem to do a whole pile and was hanging on on reputation perhaps. but i'd put a lot of that down to a dip in confidence. here's hoping for a big performance. those kick passes are suicide though. they come off sometimes and look spectacular but they're far too erratic. Back to the game. this is one of the strangest build ups i've seen in cavan. there really is no word coming out of the camp at all and on the back of the league i really don't know what way cavan will set up!! theweanling (Cavan) - Posts: 414 - 15/05/2019 10:30:35 2184248 Link 0 |
A long time since I have seen M Reilly playing as a forward for the county set up. Lads you are all on about C O'Reilly but can he hack it I am not sure he is ready for the big strong seasoned players yet. Nice scorer I will not take that away from him but could he last 70 plus minuets against Monaghan I wonder ????. He is of course a player for the future no doubt once he hardens up and gets cute for the old pro's.

Moynagh was probably our best player in league. Much more athletic this year and inproved fitness. doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts: 1467 - 15/05/2019 11:52:09 2184269 Link 0 |
Good post.you could actually see MReilly track back to mark McManus. I'd like to see Madden in. 2 man full forward line Inaroundehouse (Cavan) - Posts: 975 - 15/05/2019 11:55:19 2184270 Link 0 |
Yes for sure Martin is a seasoned player with intelligence and may well be clever enough to handle McManus for maneuverability Martin is second to none and McManus will not get handy frees from him either. It will be nice to see when they line out on the pitch where Martin will settle himself. Great heart as well pity more cannot take a leaf from his book. As for midfield I personally don't think Galligan has what this position takes to be honest and if it's Graham and Galligan we will be roasted but if they do start I hope they prove me wrong. .

I don't think midfield will be a priority as both keepers are well able to go long with kick outs thus bypassing it if needed.I'd expect McKiernan to be Centre forward with Mc Vitty and Murray hopefully either side. Direct ball is the key I'd say to beating Monaghan. We certainly don't need a defensive dogfight especially aagainst Monaghan. They way too experienced playing that type of game. Use the width of Breffni and stretch them.

I totally agree with you but it's been a long time since they played the width of the pitch home or away.

The width of the pitch seemed to be the tactic in alot of the league. The Kerry game in Breffni had the 2 half forwards hugging the sidelines for most of the match to spread it out.

Good to see actual football being discussed here for a change and not the usual negative sniping from the usual suspects ;-) Pullhard1985 (USA) - Posts: 68 - 16/05/2019 12:21:14 2184558 Link 1 |
Do you think Oisin Kiernan is ready to play a full game at inter-county level. Less than three months after heavy treatment for Cancer has to have taken it's toll on his energy. Please god he is up to it for he is an inspiration to us all and I commend his efforts to get back. The best of luck to him going forward.

We tried direct in league and it just came straight back out.

What's happened to Argue? Was he injured or did he opt out? I see he played for B'Boro against Knockbride last week and scored a few points. opa01 (Cavan) - Posts: 506 - 16/05/2019 16:00:15 2184652 Link 0 |
So what do you suggest? Usual 13 men behind the ball crap that we been playing since 2012??

I seem to remember us playing stacking football and finishing as top scorers in league. Even McGleenan for a while played adventurous football till he got spooked. I'd suggest aggressive tackling, filtering players back to clog space in front of McManus then countering at speed moving the ball as quickly as possible through foot passing if on and hands if not with two or three coming of the sholder. If no space then wing forwards pulled wide and wing half backs coming at speed while going from one side of field to other to find space. Corner forwards should come out on loop and get on end of ball and at speed to take their scores. Speed, workrate, fitness and aggression be key. doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts: 1467 - 16/05/2019 17:41:55 2184680 Link 1 |
It's not long that Martin Reilly played as a forward for the county,, the last game in the league against Dublin.
