McBride, Martin

Ballinagh GAA was devastated by the sudden death of 32-year-old Martin McBride, Caughoo, on Wednesday, November 16th, 2016. A warm and friendly young man who helped manage his family's dairy farming enterprise as well as working in the well-known family business, McBride Shuttering Contractors, Martin was a huge supporter of the club and rarely missed a game. Outside of farming, gaelic football was his greatest love and he rose to prominence as an outstanding defender with the local club, whom he represented right through the ranks from juvenile level to U21 and junior. He also served at committee level, including recent stints as assistant secretary and secretary of the juvenile board. The McBride family are synonymous with Ballinagh and one of Martin's proudest moments was when his brother Killian lifted the Oliver Plunkett Cup in Breffni Park on October 13th, 2013, after captaining Ballinagh to their breakthrough senior championship, beating Cavan Gaels in the final. Martin's parents Padraig and Nellie have sponsored the club extensively over the years, while his sister-in-law, Edel, is club physio. St Felim's Church was full to capacity with mourners at Martin McBride's funeral, where joint Guards of Honour were provided by Ballinagh gaelic football and camogie clubs.
