Cavan V Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Overall, very happy with our approach, especially in the second half, when we always seem to come to life under Ray. Definitely no white flag taken on to the field unlike past Cavan teams facing Tyrone.

Kildare were in a similar position at the death of their game v Wicklow a few weeks ago. They used their last play directly and were rewarded with the winning point. Can't understand why we were passing the ball about when we were crying out for a ball into the square. The ref was equally puzzled and eventually gave up on us and called time. Lesson for the future, time is a scarce commodity, especially if you are a point behind and good enough to extract a bit more. That's the thing. We were good enough last Sunday. Pride.

I think the black card was spot on. Lynch's yellow was suspect to me as he did nothing except hold Hampsey off.

Hampsey pulled a player down to the ground off the ball which is clearly a black card if not two. There may also have been some verbal abuse that the ref heard.

The other thing which is pleasing is that often a ref will chicken out and give two yellows. In this case he took the right decision - the instigator should have the heavier sanction particularly when there was no retribution.

Also good to see some well wishes from our neighbours real GAA fans. There will always be the few messers but we should ignore them - what they post says more about them than us. Our lads should also stay away from the Monaghan forum - it really does come across as childish.

So bit of time there to ruminate on Sunday. Still not shook the feeling that this was both a massive missed chance, but also some room to feel proud of the boys and see that we can get even better and we can compete. It feels like these two thoughts clash in my head, but it's where we are at

First off want to mention the ref. Won't say too much as lot said on him already. On watching back, I don't think he was as poor as first seemed. He did make mistakes though. A few big ones, but overall a tough match to ref. Think the black card was possibly harsh but likely correct. But he also missed other black card offences, a strike to the face, physio treated players not going off, and potential penalty at the end. I also feel he was not overall consistent. This annoys me. I'm ok with picky refs, but he changed during the match and so was hard to gauge how to play to him. I also think they got some handy frees way easier than our lads. 3 scorable frees inside the 45 in 100 minutes tells a lot. Anyway, that's that (ended up saying a lot).

We had our chances. Initially thought the 1st half was poor. It was, but not as bad as first thought. We very nearly went in only a few points down, but that late flurry and some long shot points got them away from us. We seemed to start game slowly (even allowing for the goal) but there was a lot of figuring out and they were extremely defensive and counter attacking. Much like an underdog would do. Hard to break that down when they're all back in the 45. Took the black card and starting to go at them to get back into the game. But we had our chances. I've not seen the stats, but the wides, the dropped short shots, and the blocks was just too high at this level. I don't get how some lads can be at the D in the scoring zone and not have it clear the bar. Maybe the heat took a little strength out of legs maybe

Another annoyance was our passing. It was very wayward and poor at times. Hand passes going behind lads, making them stop to get the ball, or bouncing to their toes making them slow to retrieve it. Kick passes over the sideline or just way off target. Our industry and fitness ended up covering a lot of this, but also likely fatigued us as well. We seem a fit team, but we then did fall off in extra time. As they did as well tbf. But we had the ability to be fitter than them but just hadn't enough and the way we played overall took a lot out of us

On chances missed, I'd be very hesitant to criticise Brían O'Connell as he was immense. His equaliser is what saved normal time for us. But a little part of me wishes that ball was squared across and win that in normal time. Extra time was always going to be hard for us (also a huge break in between - surely legs seize up after stopping for that long?). But anyway. It's where we were at and we got more time from it

We were brave. We had to be after falling so far back. But we now need to take so much from that. We have seen last 2 games how we can play and how we can attack and score. A few tweaks to team, tactics, shot selection, and passing and we could be a very good team. This now needs to be the new standard. The boys brought the crowd into it, and the crowd got behind them and were supporting them the whole way. We need to break the glass ceiling. Being in games and attacking is what we need. There's teams in Pot 3 and even likely losing finalists who will want to avoid us, and people are taking notice. We need to be looking up and moving up a level and making this the new standard. And then push on again to the next level. I'll finish by say again how proud I am of the lads representing themselves and the county on the field. They gave everything, and left every ounce of energy out there. It's as much as you can ask for, it's just such a pity it wasn't a win. We just have to keep behind them as they are a team that we can all have pride in and can't wait to continue this journey. They deserve that at least

Ah stop. You're posting anonymously on this forum yourself. Get off the high horse. Slagging our neighbours is part and parcel of what makes the GAA great. Leave the pontificating and virtue signalling in the classroom please. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the too and fro between forums. Real GAA fans? No, real GAA fans don't spend time looking for browning points from their rivals.

Poor first half, lack of self belief has been an issue for Cavan teams for a long time.
Raymond Galligan was asked why he took the job and he answered that he could see a lot of potential .
Didn't believe him but last Sunday's gutsy performance may have shifted my opinion all be it tentatively.
Hopefully we'll get a good draw next time out.
Great game of football even though we lost.

Still not the better of Sunday, it was like going through 12 rounds in the ring. End to end stuff, even in the first half at times. Sickening to lose it. I thought we were the better team for alot of the game. But ultimately we probably made around three times the amount of unforced errors and poor shot selection as they did, which is always going to catch up with you against a division 1 team.

Difficult to know where Tyrone are at. The younger lads they have look like good players. I don't think there will be much between themselves and Donegal on Sunday. 2/1 seems like good value to me. We did look dangerous in attack and we completely out run them in the second half. The subs made a huge contribution. It looked like Tiernan Madden was inches away from finding the corner at the end of extra time. Devastating at the end not to get a shot off. Oisin Brady was free on the terrace side for an easy mark.

I didn't like Dooher telling the players to go straight in after the game. After a marathon championship game, you should stay out and soak it in. It seems like they didn't rate their win at all.

Would be nice to be heading up to Omagh this weekend for a replay. To me extra time seems like such a poor way to end what had been such a good contest. Best players on the field having to come off. Doesn't make much sense to me. But apparently 52 weeks in a year doesn't give enough time. Nobody is standing up for the Ulster championship other than McGuinness.

Looking forward to the group stages now. It's great to have a set of proper championship games to look forward to. And with the new format anything can happen. There is always the chance of a miracle draw and god knows where you could end up. A dream group would probably be Galway, Clare, Monaghan & Cavan. Will McVeety be back or could Gearoid be called back in

It's still early. In fairness if Ryan O'Toole played for Cavan, you would probably be heading off this week to play Donegal. Then you could have proven that the *** title in 2020 actually was real.

And no better off as 4th seeds still…. The real championship starts in a few weeks lads. The big boy stuff.

If Ryan O'Toole was from Cavan he wouldn't get his game, Monaghan would need several of our players to beat us

Grammar & spelling lessons?

If you're going to start that at least get it right.

Sorry about that. It was meant to be YOUR, in reply to the fact that the original post put same in caps. It autocorrected to you're. I'm no grammar expert and certainly won't be correcting yours. Again, back to the question, what then is YOUR All Ireland? It certainly isn't realistic for you to aim for the one played in Croke Park at the end of the county season. Is it the win against a Dublin selection in January?
