Tailteann Cup Not The Answer

(Oldest Posts First)

Gaa got it wrong again they are too proud to admit that the ladies gaa have the perfect championship Senior Intermediate and Junior same as every county structure for their own championship they did not try and reinvent the wheel. The main reason for this is that too many counties think they are above these competitions as they had a good run in the sam maguire 50 years ago. The Carlow manager came out and said that they beat laois 8 years ago in the championship and he would not like to see days like this gone.
Now we are back to a Senior championship where only 4 teams at most have any chance of winning (probably 2 kerry and Dublin) and a Tailteann Cup where probably 6 teams are in with a chance as in a normal year no team from division 4 will have any chance of winning.
I cant understand giving the serious committment that all couties must give that they continue to do so with 95 percent of them having zero chance of any reward.
To win any championship medal in Croke park in my eyes even for Cavan would be a brilliant achievement and at least be some reward for such committed players

The ladies GAA and indeed the way the hurling is split up for championship is the way to go… The football is been held up by the provincial set up and weaker counties demanding to stay in the Sam Maguire up till now…. This Tailteann cup must go well or it will fall by the wayside

The provincial championships is about money so they will never get rid of them.
Even though the Ulster Championship is the more competitive the other 3 are a waste of time as mainly through up the same 2 finalists year after year.
If there was a place in the last 8 of the All Ireland series available to this years winners of the Tailteann cup it might pose more interest.
Take any Ulster team . Minimum of 3 tough games to win Ulster.
Kerry on the other hand have no test to win Munster.

Should have the beating of them but you never know with Down.
They are at a low ebb by their standards but I wouldn't be taking them for granted either.

Proper championship restructure starts with ditching the provincial championships, but that's something that just won't happen. It suits certain teams to retain them and there's clearly a power-trip with those in positions of authority - Leinster council, Ulster Council etc.. They don't want to lose their positions essentially.

The championship in it's current format is wholly uncompetitive, Galway hammering Leitrim, Kerry with a gimme down in Munster, Dublin walking through Leinster - what good does that do anyone? And the Tailteann Cup format just proves you can't trust those making decisions to actually make the right ones. The format is a complete joke and those counties taking part were sold a complete lie. Cavan probably favourites to win it on paper but it doesn't do what it's supposed to, may as well of just retained the qualifiers for all teams rather than this in its current format.

i know in leinister where you are coming from with Dublin so dominant but the Ulster Championship is still a brilliant competition. It is the only one of the four that is genuinely competitive and i would hate to see it go. At the start of each year every county in ulster feels they have some chance of success and i can see how players from all nine counties will put in the huge committment needed to compete in it.
Why would any division four player put in the same committment to either the sam maguire cup or tailteann cup when they have almost zero chance of success why not head to america and play for the summer where you are guarenteed some reward.
If you have Senior Intermediate and junior championship then most counties have some faint hope of success especially if Dublin come back into the pack.
