GAA Should Take A Stronger Stance On Bullying

(Oldest Posts First)

Should the gaa take a stronger stance on bullying and social exclusion which is a serious problem for young teens ie 13 to 18 year old and can lead to tragic results for all concerned especially the young person who is at the recieving end of such thuggery. I have seen it in my own club in both boys and girl camogie codes where normally the best and most talented players are put on a pedestal and the way they treat an individual is normally copied by the group.
At this stage and in light of recent tradegies it is time for the GAA to stand up show leadership and ensure that this behaviour is stamped out. I know this will be very difficult but it has to start with better edutation of our young people of the serious damage that seemingly simple things like social exclusion can do to the person at the recieving end of such treatment.
There has to be serious repercusions for the most serious forms ie physical bullying and social media bullying and anyone involved in same should be immediately banned from playing with their clubs until the matter is investigated and if they are found guilty the person or persons should be banned from all gaa activity for a period of one year to total life ban for serious bullying.
Imagine the message this would send out to these thugs

I agree that something needs to be done and the GAA should be doing all they can to support any kids who have the misfortune to be bullied.

The conduct of some coaches needs to be looked at aswell. In the last few weeks I have seen u-9 coaches roaring at kids throughout a game and taking off kids for lifting the ball of the ground and them making them stand away from the other kids as punishment. I told him to calm down and he looked at me as I had two heads.

It would help if the county board should stop alagalations so more young people could play football rather than the select few.

do amalgamations not happen because if they didnt then many players in clubs wouldnt be able to play at all or they happen to allow players from small clubs who will never go senior play to a level more appropriate to their ability

stopping amalgamations would reduce how many can play not get more playing

Either way it has nothing to do with bullying.

Amalgamations only happen cause father's of little Johnny want them to be as strong as possible so they can win a medal regardless whether some players quit.

It sounds like someone wasn't good enough to get on the team ahead of little Johnny......

The father of Little Johnnie is usually the team manager. The Mother usually the coach and one of the uncles probably drives the bus and sponsors the team kit. And the grandfather is probably president of the club!

No had no problems but amalgamations wasn't to big a thing when I was younger but it seems a big thing now. I don't think there is club in Cavan that hasn't joined with another in the last ten years.

Back in the early 70s I remember SeanLeddy ( Butlersbridge) RIP and Ciaran O Keefe ( Drumalee) and Brendan Crowe ( Killygarry) playing with Cavan Gaels minor team while playing with the own clubs at junior and senior level. This was because their own clubs hadn't any minor team at the time. In the mid 70s you had Oliver Plunketts U16 team comprising of the Gaels, Drumalee and Killygarry. And in 78 the Gaels minor team consisted of players from Killygarry, Drumalee and Butlersbridge because there was no minor teams at these clubs. Same for Lavey / Laragh too.
No problems and many a good lasting friendship made even though players went back to their own clubs after underage level.

I have no problems with clubs joining up when they have due to lack of numbers the problem is nowadays it's about having the best team so they can win and not about getting children to play football. That's why clubs are having problems fielding reserved teams due to losing players at underage.
