An interesting article out from Cahair O Kane regarding playing all matches on a Friday evening. If the Cavan county board are serious about holding players going forward, I believe we need to be urgently explored it as its something players would prefer. It provides a better balance between matches and training and allows people to relax at a weekend. gada95 (Cavan) - Posts: 5 - 09/06/2021 09:04:41 2349143 Link 0 |
There have been championship matches held on Friday nights in the not so distant past. What it means for someone working in Dublin, for example, is having to leave work early to make it down to Cavan (and even west cavan) for 7pm. Outside of summer months, it also means all grounds would need match-standard floodlights. It would hugely favour East cavan clubs over West cavan clubs. Not a practical or fair solution IMO. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 09/06/2021 10:26:13 2349156 Link 0 |
I accept that point surely and understand the logisitics of it. As the article said, Friday and Saturday for matches are far superior to playing a match on a Sunday afternoon. Young lads breaking onto a senior team are going to quickly lose interest when they see there friends out on a Saturday night. gada95 (Cavan) - Posts: 5 - 09/06/2021 11:17:14 2349168 Link 0 |
Yeah, Saturdays would work for most I would say. Evening preferably if daylight/floodlights permitted. The age band for the vast vast majority of drop-outs is 18-23. Fixtures need to recognise the reason for this and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that weekend part-time jobs, travel to/from college, drinking bans etc are huge contributing factors. Saturday evening games allows lads a night out and and Sunday off, it means they are back from college for the weekend, and for most (admittedly not all) it means they can hold down a weekend job. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5200 - 09/06/2021 14:11:50 2349207 Link 0 |
You can still go out on a Saturday night and play a game Sunday.

yea, young folk want to be pandered to in every way these days. Go back to the good old days when you'd bring your gear to a 21st and head to an 11 o'clock game on a sunday from the house party.
