Wexford earned promotion to Division 3 of the Allianz Football League this evening thanks to a 0-20 to 0-12 victory against Wicklow at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
John Hegarty’s side booked their place into the Division 4 final with two rounds remaining after recording their fifth consecutive win off the back of a superb performance against their neighbours.
A strong start saw the hosts towards a 0-6 to 0-3 lead after 20 minutes and a Shane Pettit two-pointer put them five ahead.
Veteran marksman Ben Brosnan hit the Slaneysiders’ ninth point with six minutes remaining in the first-half and a Darragh Brooks two-pointer from a free would be backed up by a Kevin O’Grady white flag late in the half, leaving the scoreboard reading 0-12 to 0-4.
Eoin Porter and Pairic Hughes stretched the Wexford lead early in the restart and, while Oisin McConville’s side looked to stop the rot with points from Dean Healy and Eoin Darcy, they wouldn’t be able to close the large margin as Brosnan and Kevin O’Grady kept the points coming for the Model men.
Brooks came up to land a second two-pointer with 10 minutes to go and Glen Malone would shoot over five minutes later to raise the home side’s tally to 0-20, which saw them winning out by eight points in the end secure Division 3 league football for next season.
